Mission

Yspaniola empowers marginalized batey communities of Dominicans and Haitians in the Dominican Republic. Through university scholarships, a literacy center, and community development, we provide resources for individuals and bateys to access local networks and rise out of poverty.

Programs

University Scholarship Program: we provide full scholarships for four students from Batey Libertad to attend university in Santiago. The scholars live with our scholarship coordinator, who tutors the scholars and oversees extracurricular programs and leadership development. Literacy Center: in Batey Libertad, we have opened a center to promote reading. Programming includes morning and afternoon tutoring sessions for children in the community, and we are preparing to offer adult literacy classes. Microenterprise: Yspaniola helped created and now supports a mostly autonomous microenterprise project in which women from Batey Libertad construct and sell paper mache houses. Yspaniola helps with reaching a broader sales base and contributes space for the women to use.
