Learn How Your Donations Have Impacted the Lives of Youth in Mexico

Ricardo Moreno, 17

We recently spoke to a few students who received scholarships to study at the RIA through your donations to our project on GlobalGiving. We want to share with you the amazing things they said about the way in which the scholarships have impacted their lives:

Ricardo Moreno, Age 17

I thought I was very lucky to receive a scholarship thanks to Global Giving. At first I laughed because I was a bit nervous, but then I felt extremely happy. I've finished the whole basic route, and I remember that at the beginning I didn't know how to turn on a computer. Now, thanks to the RIA, I can do much more like graphics, Internet searches, write emails and open accounts in social networks so that I can talk with friends. I think I have a better future thanks to the classes I took at the RIA. I enjoy helping out my classmates with their doubts about the computer and most of all with the Internet. In the future I would like to be an accountant, and everything I have learned at the RIA will help me reach my goals. I want to say to all youth out there that they should join the RIA because they will learn a lot, the courses are very interesting and the attention that the teachers give to the students and the way in which they teach helps me prepare for my future.

Karin Morales, Age 17

I was fortunate enough to receive the scholarship through GlobalGiving, and it was a great incentive to start using computers and the Internet. Everything I've learned has helped me in school; my favorite course was on the Internet, in which I learned how to open an account in different social networks. I want to be a psychologist and do something like the RIA so that I can work with children and help them. I wish more young people and friends would enroll in the RIA, and I have recommended it to everyone.

Marco Antonio, Age 14,

I am very grateful to the RIA because thanks to them I had a chance to study with the scholarship awarded to me by the donations made on Global Giving. I've learned so many things that have made me better at school assignments and understanding how the world works today. I also learned that you can be close to those who are not physically with you through social networks. RIA is an excellent place to learn things that they don’t teach you in school. I want to be a graphic designer, and the RIA courses helped me to introduce myself into that world. I have encouraged my friends to join a RIA center, and many of them are already taking a class.

Jimena Rodríguez Pérez, Age 12

I was so excited [to receive a scholarship] because I never thought I would get picked since I knew nothing about computers. At the RIA I've learned a lot about technology but also about the benefits of knowing the different types of communication that exist… I really enjoyed all the classes and have recommended them to my peers… I want to be chef, and I have learned how to look for recipes and cooking videos on the Internet. Thanks to this I feel better prepared for what lies ahead. The RIA allowed me to reflect on what the world would be if we could all see the importance of our actions and their consequences on the planet with the help of Internet.

Project Report June 2011

First off, thanks to everyone who donated to our project yesterday during GlobalGiving’s Bonus Day. We are now even closer to our goal of raising $20,000 for scholarships for children at the RIA.

We are just about to distribute our next batch of scholarships sponsored mainly by the overwhelming support we received on the Bonus Day in March. We will be able to sponsor nearly 300 children to take summer computer courses and our basic learning route at the RIA! Check back soon for testimonials from children who have already enrolled in the scholarship program. In the meantime, below are a few more photos of students who received scholarships in January.

GlobalGiving Site Visit With Fundacion Proacesso

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chloe Gray and Aleph Molinari for taking time out of their busy schedules to show me the fully functioning RIA centers that have been established by Fundacion Proacesso.

Aleph, a native of Mexico City, saw an enormous gap of inadequate levels of computer literacy amongst his fellow country men and women, and therefore took it upon himself, with the assistance of his colleagues, to establish some of the most successful computer literacy centers in the country.  AND ITS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!!!

But if Fundacion Proecesso builds it will the people come?  Was it a leap of faith?  This was obviously a question that the Fundacion Proacesso team faced when designing these robust centers.  After spending just a few hours with the team at Fundacion Proacesso it became quite clear that it was anything but a leap of faith.  Rather it was a calculated analysis stemming from pragmatic and unwavering execution—encapsulated by extreme care, holistic trainers and training, proper equipment, due-diligence, community ownership, and cross sector teamwork.

Ok, ok, ok.  So they are doing a great job.  So what does it all mean?  It means that in just a few years of being in operation this organization has graduated around 18,000 people from their courses and they are scaling up by building more and more centers at an exponential rate.  All one has to do is look at the course calendar for the next month and see that each center is booked solid.  It’s because people WANT to learn.

Access to information and the internet were termed by the BBC as being a fundamental human right.  Whether you believe that or not it is important to recognize that the services being offered at the RIA centers are paramount.  If you have the ability to read this post it’s because you have had some capacity in computer training.  By supporting this organization you are choosing to not only support an AMAZING team but you are also choosing to create a more prosperous future for the Mexican citizenry with capabilities of multiplying seeing as knowledge leaks to others.  Information and knowledge is not a commodity to be used by only one person.

I recently heard a quote that stated, “talent is universal, opportunity is not.”  By supporting Fundacion Proacesso you ensure that your dollar is being put to best use to ensure that talent is supported universally.
