Programs

Throughout India, gender disparity remains a significant barrier to education. The result: more than 3 million girls across the country are out of school. Founded in 2007, Educate Girls is a non-governmental organization that holistically tackles issues at the root of gender inequality in India's educational system. With a focus on enrollment, retention and learning, Educate Girls aims to provide QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL UNDERSERVED AND MARGINALIZED GIRLS by mobilizing public, private, and community resources to improve access to education and school quality. By leveraging the government's existing investment in schools, Educate Girls delivers measurable results to a large number of beneficiaries and avoids duplication or parallel delivery of services. TEAM BALIKA: We are building a cadre of village based youth leaders to work as champions for girls' education and catalysts for school reform. Team Balika members work in the schools as well as village communities spreading awareness on girl child education. They boast enrollment, retention and learning outcomes for all girls. ENROLLMENT/RETENTION: We train existing School Management Committees (SMCs) in making the school infrastructure more girl friendly. Together we develop action plans for girls' enrollment and support the SMCs in accessing government funding for school improvement projects. A sample study of 500 schools indicated that schools with separate girls' toilets and drinking water facilities have increased from 44% to 71% and from 46% to 82% respectively. LEARNING: Our pre-tests in government schools have found that only 15% primary school children can read a simple story in Hindi, their native language. We train government teachers in child-centric, "Creative Learning and Teaching" (CLT) techniques to ensure an increase in learning levels and outcomes. PROMOTE GIRL LEADERSHIP: We form Girls' Councils or "Bal Sabhas", which stimulate girls' participation in matters related to their growth and development. Through the "Bal Sabhas" girls are equipped with life skills. With a management and outreach office in Mumbai and operations in 6 critical gender-gap districts in Rajasthan, Educate Girls currently implements its programs in over 8,000 schools in over 4,500 villages. In the last seven years, Educate Girls has enrolled over 80,000 girls and over 390,000 children have demonstrated improved learning outcomes.
