Dear Green Rhino Supporter,

It is with great pleasure that we let you know that 1100 Green Rhinos are going strong in the Indian Sundarbans!

After planting over 7000 trees and conducting garbage cleaning drives, this year the Green Rhinos are hard at work with their current tree plantation plans. They plan to plant 11,000 tree saplings of which approximately one third will be raised by the Green Rhinos teams. Project work will start from May 2014.

Teams will create compost pits in their schools. They will make organic manure from the waste collected in the pits and use this manure for tending the tree saplings that they will plant. Some teams will conduct an awareness campaign for nature protection.

Shefali Maity, a Green Rhino who is now assisting with training others, says, "It is my dream to plant 25,000 trees in Sundarbans".

Expansion plans for the Program with schools in Kolkata are underway. The Program will also start in the tea garden area in North Bengal in the latter part of 2014.

Thank you for being a part of our team. Do spread the word so that the Green Rhinos Program can spread to other parts of India and the world!

With warm regards,

Diti

Transforming lives of young people in Sundarbans

Dear Kind Supporter,

We are pleased to inform you that since the inception of the Solar Lamps Project in 2011, we have provided 1300 solar lamps to individual students, provided solar lighting for a girls' school hostel with 40 students and sets of twin solar lights to 8 government high school hostels and a coaching centre benefitting over 400 students. Since April 2012, we are inducting the students who are receiving the solar lamps into the Green Rhinos Program, a transformational youth nature leadership program.

It is amazing to see how a single solar lamp has transformed the lives of the young people who receive it. They are now able to study for much longer hours by a source of light that is steady and powerful. Their families who are already very poor do not need to incur any recurring cost for providing them this light. Carbon emissions are also being reduced as kerosene is not being used. This is benefitting the fragile ecosystem of the Sundarbans.

All this has been possible because we are working together as a team. These young people know that they have friends from all over the world and this is a source of inspiration and reassurance for them.

We look forward to your continued support.

With warm regards,

Diti

Dear Kind Supporter,

As this year draws to a close, over 1100 Green Rhinos wish you a very happy 2014!

In 2013 they planted over 7000 trees! Shefali Maity, a teenage girl in the Sundarbans, raised 100 tree saplings! She along with her fellow Green Rhinos from school, with the assistance of their schoolmaster, planted 1500 trees in school and around their homes.

In 2014 some of the projects the Green Rhinos have planned are:

  • 16500 tree saplings to be planted
  • 4 waterbodies to be cleaned
  • Environmental awareness campaigns to be conducted
  • Bio-fertiliser to be made from throw away organic waste in school and used as fertiliser in the school campus.

In 2014 we hope to work with more schools in urban areas, including Kolkata, and continue our work with the schools in the Sundarbans.

Thank you so much for being a part of our team!

With prayers for peace and happiness,

Diti Mookherjee
