Mission

The South Kivu Women's Media Association (AFEM) is a group of 42 women media professionals that works for the advancement of Congolese women through all available media outlets and fights for gender equaliy in all areas of public life. AFEM specializes in the production of rural and urban radio shows aimed to educate and promote women's rights as a benefit to the entire community.

Programs

AFEM faces a hostile climate towards journalists where three journalists have been killed since 2007 in South Kivu. Women face a particular challenge as they do not have access to as many professional advancement and training opportunities as men do. Overall, the quality and objectivity of journalism and educational media in eastern Congo is extremely low, but there is a large potential to make significant positive impacts on communities through media.
