We foster the development of children at social risk in Chile by training and empowering volunteers to serve as positive role models, educators and advocates of social justice. To achieve our mission, we: Create and implement engaging education and recreation programs for children. Develop leadership and mentoring skills in volunteers throughout their intensive, long-term service commitment. Collaborate with child service organizations by providing complementary programming and support, introducing children to new opportunities, and garnering resources and social capital. Empowering volunteers to make a difference

Concerning reports from the International Labour Organization (ILO) show that almost 170 million children currently work in the world. Half of them are obligated to work under unsafe conditions, including jobs where they have to handle dangerous materials or are exposed to sexual exploitation.

VE Global works in order to change this cruel reality by fostering the positive development of children at social risk in Chile. To do that, the organization carefully selects, trains, empowers and coordinates international volunteers integrating them into VE's network of 6 local children's homes, community centers, schools and preschools in some of the most vulnerable areas of Santiago.

Because of the delicate nature of working with children who have been abused or neglected, VE requires that volunteers join their team for a minimum of four months, with a full-time commitment. In this line, the first two weeks, after their arrival to Chile, is one of the most important stages of the volunteer experience.

This period is called Orientation Week and it consists in an intensive training process, where new volunteers learn a complete set of skills that will help them preform in a professional and effective way when working with children.

As part of the Orientation Week's activities, VE trains its volunteers in Chilean history, health and safety, Chilean childcare system, educational strategies, colaborative problem solving techniques, reproductive health, among other crucial topics and methods. This will deeply help each volunteer to develop a set of skills that are necesaary to work under these challenging environments.

New Group of Volunteers Just Arrived

We are very excited and proud to welcome our new group of volunteers that arrived to Chile on May 2013. They have come from Australia, England and the United States, to work with children at social risk and support the partner organizations in where VE Global collaborates.

At VE we encourage our volunteers to learn and use a second language in doing social work. It helps create a global community for the children of our partner organizations, allows us to have a great impact in the children’s lives, and generates social inclusion, emotional and cognitive development, and equal opportunities.

We are certain that the skills and knowledge of our great volunteer team combined with the amazing support of our office staff puts us on the right track of our mission to tackle inequality by being positive role models and advocates of social justice in Chile.

Art, Frisbee, and Fundraising!

In mid-April, we hosted our biannual Festival de Arte with the theme of recycled art.  Forty children from our partner organizations gathered in a museum in Santiago to showcase their artwork and perform dancing and singing numbers.  The January 2013 volunteer class opened the show with a fun dance to the song Harlem Shake and got the kids excited to perform. The evening was an exciting event for the kids to share and be rewarded for their artistic creations.  Thank you to the Bechtel Chile Spouses Group for their donation of delicious baked goods, and our sponsor, American Tower, for their tremendous support!

This month’s Liga de Deportes was dominated by a game of ultimate frisbee.  Hunter Stephan, a September 2012 class volunteer, taught thirty children the fundamentals of the game.  With the weather staying so warm for the beginning of fall, the kids enjoyed another sunny afternoon outside!

The January 2013 volunteer class has begun their fundraising campaign!  Help them raise money for children at social risk in Santiago, Chile! PLEASE WATCH AND SHARE! They shook it, will you? http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/shakeitforthekids/janclass2013
