We are super pumped! More Than Me was chosen, as one of 25 lucky organizations, to compete for $1 Million in the 2nd Annual Chase American Giving Awards contest!
This is BIG (super BIG, like to the moon and back BIG)! The winner will be announced during a live NBC special on December 8th — we must be that winner!
Voting doesn’t start until Nov. 27th, but we have to mobilize now, and we need YOU (yes, you) — you’re the reason we’ve gotten this far!
1st things 1st — we’re forming a legion of people committed to making it impossible for us to lose and we’re calling it: “Abigail’s Tribe”. The only way to win is to get the most votes through Facebook and Abigail’s Tribe is going to ensure this happens! (The Facebook voting details will be announced Nov. 27th, the 1st day of the contest).

Abigail is our focal point for this contest. Why? Read this letter she wrote to us this past Sunday.
My name is Abigail.
I’m 13 years old. I live in West Point, Liberia. I don’t know my parents… I was left with women I didn’t know when I was 6 years old. They took care of me, but life was hard. Often, I didn’t have a place to sleep or food to eat. I was in and out of school. I used to sleep at a video club, that’s how I survived. I was abused, both in my mind and body. I didn’t feel loved.
When I met Katie and More Than Me, my life changed. I have a new home now and food to eat. I’m in school now. I’m happy now. I feel like I have a future now. I feel loved. I’ve learned how to bake, which helps me earn extra money.
Thank God for More Than Me — they are the only family I have now. Please help vote for me so I can continue in this new life and stay in school. Your vote is my future. I’ll do anything to show you that I’ll do my best in school and become something with my life.
We also need 150 more people to donate $10 for a chance to work with Nike's The Girl Effect! These are both such amazing opportunitites for us and we don't want to miss our on either. Give here: http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/educating-to-end-child-prostitution/ to help us reach our goals and get more girls in school!
Abigail was on the streets. She was exploited. Abused as a vulnerable 10-year-old girl. And now?She is now 13 and in the 7th grade. She's a top student. She knows how to bake, a skill that she can use to earn an income. She dreams of being a leading voice for millions of girls just like her - and we expect her to do it!We are only able to open her life up because of you. It's that simple. It's not complex. She is off the streets and on a path of impact because of... you.We have a couple incredible opportunities in front of us - and we need you:1) Nike (yes, Nike!) nominated us to join the organizations they partner with to help girls around the world. All we need to be ELECTED is a whole bunch of you to vote (by donating as little as $10) and it'll be official. Nike wants to see that we have grassroots support - let's show them and change some lives right here. Go now to the voting/donation site at http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/educating-to-end-child-prostitution/2) The biggest opportunity we've had is also looking right at us. It's a chance to end the atrocities that Abigail and all the girls in her situation stare down everyday. We can't give you the details yet... but we can say we don't need $ from you for this. We need people with large and small online audiences to galvanize their friends and family to help -- it won't take much but it will mean everything to Abigail and girls just like her. Stay tuned, and we'll let you know on November 14th when we're allowed to talk about what's going on. Email us: email@example.com if you'd like to be more involved!Together we can do this for Abigail!
The More than Me team is so stinking excited to finally have the ball rolling on the construction of the More than Me Girls' Academy. This is a huge step for us as an organization, in both our ability to help our current students to achieve their goals and to be able reach so many new students. Every day we are preparing to take on this new challenge in Liberia, with all hands on board there and in the states. We look forward to updating you on the progress of this project as we watch our dream become a reality!
Here is a message from one of the leaders of the building project who was in Liberia for the ceremony:
Well we are another step closer. Today we held a ground breaking ceremony attended by the Superintendent of Montserrado, the Honourable Representative of the District and the donors for the building renovation.
Macintosh did a good speech, the girls sang beautifully, Esther pleaded for us to do more and we all dug a bit of soil. On Monday there’ll be soil, cement and timber flying all over the place and in three months we’re going to have a school.
There’s loads to do: employ staff, organise a curriculum, get new students, work out how the tax system works, etc, etc. But we’re all feeling pretty pumped right now and I reckon we can do it. In 3 months time get ready for the Big opening ceremony.
All the best,
Advisory Board Member in Liberia
