A Home Within

A Home Within promotes the emotional health of foster children and youth and those who care for them by creating and supporting lasting, caring relationships. Our direct services, professional training, public awareness and advocacy efforts focus solely on enhancing the emotional well being of the foster care community. We envision a world in which foster children are counted among those who have at least one adult who loves and cares for them.

The People We Help

Every day we get calls from young adults who have aged out of foster care asking for therapy, along with referrals from foster parents, social workers, and attorneys. Although the reasons for the calls are similar—a child is anxious or depressed or angry—there is a unique story behind each call.

These are stories of but two of the 31 people who called us for help last month:

Carmen, aged 5, has just started kindergarten and is having extreme difficulties with transitions. Her foster mother has started to see a lot of anger and aggression, particularly connected to visits with her biological relatives. Her foster mother is hoping that a therapist will help her to learn better skills for handling Carmen’s moods so that she can continue to be a strong support for her.

John and his fiancé are both former foster youth. They are raising a four-year-old boy and are both seeking individual therapy to help them form a healthy, loving environment for their child. They have a decent support system but are looking for professionals to help them work through some of their past traumas so that they don’t pass them on to their little boy.

These children and famlies are like many others around the country who come to A Home Within for help, and we match them with therapists who will work to meet their mental health needs for as long as they need it. As you can see, we aren't just helping current and former foster youth with immediate issues, but also helping to give them the support and background for a brighter, stronger future.

It is donations like yours that ensures that we are able to provide this help, raise awareness so that they know this resource is available to them, and open new chapters—something we are constantly working on doing. We can't thank you enough for all of your support.

Forward Momentum for A Home Within

Thank You
Thank You

We've had some great news and taken some big steps recently in this ongoing project. Here are some highlights:

1022 Foster Kids
As of this report, A Home Within has provided treatment to 1022 children across the country! We are moving forward and working hard at recruiting therapists and getting them matched with clients. We can't wait to build on that number, and we could not have done it without:

  • The donations you have made;
  • The doors you have opened for us;
  • The connections we've made through you; and
  • The awareness you have raised about A Home Within.

Needle Happy
We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Needle Happy, a unique green company owned and operated by Juli Shimdaira and Dennis Chung. Needle Happy takes those items of clothing you no longer wear, but can’t bear to part with, and turns them into custom items that you can use and appreciate again. In addition to this lovely service, Juli and Dennis are generously donating 5% of all sales to A Home Within! We are delighted to be able to work with Juli and Dennis and encourage you to visit Needle Happy and spread the word.

A huge boost during National Foster Care Month

Thank You!
Thank You!

We've had some great news recently about this ongoing project, here are some highlights:

* In our biggest recruiting month ever, over 100 clinicians volunteered to begin a pro-Bono case in March. Any licensed therapist may click here and apply to join us - please share this with colleagues who may be interested in joining our national network.

*
We are now in the final round of competition for the Schwab Global Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Winning this 2012 global competition would give us a seat at the World Economic Forum. We are up against stiff international competition and it’s very exciting that we made the first cut!

*
The second edition of Forces For Good: The Six Practices of High Impact Nonprofits was released on May 7th and A Home Within is honored to be one of only thirteen organizations included in a new chapter focused on smaller, high-impact non-profits.

*
Groupon Grassroots ran a promotion for us in the Washington, DC area that attracted 252 new contributions, all matched by The Peery Foundation, which will support 1 year of therapy for 10 foster youth in the area.

So many people and groups have supported our work and recent expansion, from individual donors to grant-making foundations, and volunteer clinicians to media partners. From the whole staff here at A Home Within, thank you for making this work possible.
