Mission

Limitless Horizons Ixil's mission is to create opportunities for the indigenous youth, women, and families of Chajul, Guatemala, to develop the academic and professional skills needed to effect change in their lives and community.

Programs

At LHI, we have three core programs through which we seek to affect change and create opportunities for youth and women in Chajul. Our Youth Development Program is a comprehensive educational support and scholarship program for Chajul youth studying in middle and high school. Our community library, Saber Sin Limites (Limitless Knowledge), provides the community with literacy materials, enrichment programs, academic support and a welcoming space conducive to study. Finally, our Artisan Program offers Youth Development Program students and their mothers the opportunity to exchange woven and embroidered artisan products in exchange for fair wages and professional training. The LHI Youth Development Program is a comprehensive educational support and scholarship program for Chajul youth studying in middle and high school. This program gives youth that would not otherwise be able to continue studying beyond the 6th grade access to middle and high school studies and provides them with personal and professional development opportunities. Our goal is that upon graduation, they have the skills needed to secure employment and improve the social and economic well-being of themselves and their families. For the 2013 school year, there are 52 youth in grades 7-12 participating in the program. At least two thirds of the youth are girls; since 2011, we have exclusively added girls into the program. Youth receive a monthly scholarship check, computer and internet instruction, Spanish tutoring, school supplies to last the year, and life-skills trainings, covering themes such as sexual education, self-esteem, and financial literacy. Most importantly, our program managers mentor LHI youth. Our mentors are some of the first women in Chajul to go to university. They are role models for our LHI youth, and they love what they do. They provide students with one-on-one guidance counseling, home visits, and career advice career counseling. LHI established Chajul's first public library, Saber Sin Limites, which opened to the public in February 2010. Education professionals in Chajul expressed the desperate need for a library, as students have no access to resources for research, completing homework assignments, or reading; schools do not even have books to offer their students. In Chajul, there is no culture of reading, 75% of the adult population is illiterate, and students spend very little time on their studies outside of the 4.5-hour school day. There are currently over 1,400 library members. Through Saber Sin Limites, LHI seeks to improve general literacy, Spanish language, and information literacy skills and create a new generation in the community of Chajul that is better informed and more greatly values education and literacy. The LHI Artisan Program offers girls in the Youth Development Program and mothers of LHI youth the opportunity to create woven and embroidered artisan products such as scarves, headbands, bookmarks, and bracelets in exchange for wages and training. As women are at a particular disadvantage in Chajul, this program serves to provide consistent, fair wage employment to women and girls and help them build valuable artistic, business, and design skills, thereby allowing them to become more self-sufficient and confident in their ability to overcome poverty. The weaving designs of the Ixil region are widely known for their ornate embroidered figures and high-quality textiles. Product designs are chosen through design contests, allowing our artisans to be creative and give the products a true Chajul look. LHI pays the women a fair price for the artisan products, and then sells them internationally to raise funds to support our programs, thus both directly and indirectly returning the proceeds to the community.
