Back To School

BACK TO SCHOOL

School has begun. Our children are soaring into the new school year after a summer full of camp adventures and enriching activities. Our Higher Education for All program focuses on keeping each child within our families engaged in the pursuit of higher education and other positive activities. Our Education Specialists partner with the parents to find the best possible educational settings for each individual child and advocate for specialized services when needed.

Our children are in a variety of settings-private schools, high performing public schools, high performing public charter schools, and colleges. Our specialists follow up with classroom observations and teacher conferences to be certain that each child is getting the quality education that they deserve.

In addition, the Mike Young Education Scholarship Fund allows parents to pursue the education and vocational training they need to support their families earn a living wage, and enhance individual potential. We currently have parents working toward degrees in teaching and child development , nursing , other medical related fields, and divinity programs.

Volunteers get involved with our families by mentoring a child or becoming an academic tutor for children and adult students.

We believe that educational success is possible for all of our families. We are very excited about this new school year and know that we are preparing our students for wonderful futures.

Some People Chill, But Here We Don't Sit Still

Some People Chill, But Here We Don’t Sit Still

Summer time is thought of as a time to sit back and chill, to relax and slow down. At Hope and a Home we are doing the opposite. We are revving up for action.

The Hope and a Home children have grand plans for the summer. We have a variety of camps that children are participating in. Some will be attending enriching summer school experiences. Others will attend science and math camps, Building Museum camp, ballet camp, overnight camps, arts and music camps, a specialized diabetes camp , and much more. We want our children to be active and engaged all summer long. We look for camp experiences that will broaden and expand their world. Our staff has researched and made important connections with the camp directors so that our Hope and a Home children will have opportunities that will stimulate learning and have fun doing it. We are looking forward to an exciting summer.

Our children are not the only ones with grand summer plans. Their parents are also on the move. We have a parent getting their LPN nursing certification, another who has graduated from college with an associate’s degree, another in an employment program that will provide the career future she is seeking, and still another who is in a medical training program that is expanding her employment horizons. We also have several parents who are positioning themselves for homeownership. Our college students have returned home for the summer with much success and with high hopes for their future.

We are looking forward to a summer of excitement. Hope and a Home families will not be sitting still!

Please consider supporting our efforts by contributing funds toward summer camp for a child or toward a scholarship fund for our returning college students.

The Land Of Opportunity

Hope and a Home

The Land of Opportunity

Hope and a Home is a three year transitional housing and support program. The transitional part of our program means that families come into our program at a place of need, develop the skills and resources needed, and are then in a position to move on into permanent housing. This year 7 families have reached their time limit. These families have all made significant strides that have propelled them forward to the place where they can step out on their own and stand prepared to face whatever challenges come their way.

We stand along side families in their journey. We do not hand out or do things for them. We present the opportunities and expect that they will follow through . What we hear from families is ,“ Thank you for the opportunities that you gave us.” What they tell other families still in Hope and a Home, “Make use of the opportunities that are given to you and you will go far.”

Here are some of the opportunities and the results of our new Hope and a Home graduates:

  • Martha and Thomasina were each given homeownership resources and the support to follow the steps needed to succeed. Martha and her son are now living in the home that they own. In one month Thomasina   and her two children will be moving into their brand new condominium.
  • Donald is the father of 5 children. He wanted to further his education but didn’t have the resources. Hope and a Home helped him apply for full scholarships and also provided the tutoring support so that he could succeed. His family moved from Hope and a Home two months ago. He still returns for tutoring, proudly showing his grade point average- 3.8!
  • Laura was in a dead end job. Through the support and encouragement of our employment staff she took the steps to apply for a banking job. She and her family moved into their own home in December –fully capable of providing for her family now that she has been hired as a relationship banker.
  • Cheryl’s daughter was diagnosed with a serious illness and struggled emotionally as well as physically with the news. Hope and a Home provided the resources to get her into a program especially designed for her needs. As they move into their new home, her daughter is thriving   and they are looking forward to the next chapter of life together.
  • Tara and Carol each wanted the best school and enrichment for their children. Both of these families now have their children enrolled in excellent schools and enriching activities and the skills to advocate for their children in their school settings.

It is truly a cooperative effort of Hope and a Home and the families-presenting the opportunities and resources and the families following up to make it all happen for the achievements of their family.
