International Disaster Volunteers (IDV)

At IDV we believe that to provide meaningful relief and reconstruction assistance to disaster affected communities around the world we have to do more than reconstruct buildings. We need to understand and address the factors that made a community vulnerable to the disaster in the first place. Our work will be organised with these factors in mind so we can effect change that far outlives our presence.

Want to give a student a Merry Christmas?

Alex says thank you!
Alex says thank you!

Your support at EIM in 2013 has already made so many success stories possible.

Donors right here on GlobalGiving funded Alex’s education. He joined EIM because he wanted to become a teacher, and because of your support that’s now exactly what he’s done. He now teaches English at a local school to both adults and children.

Alex is just one success story out of dozens which have only been possible because you chose to give – thanks so much!

But while many of our students have used the education you made possible to find jobs, get scholarships, and build a brighter future, there are still over 200 people on our waiting list. They are patiently waiting for a spot in our school because there aren’t any others like it in Port au Prince.

This Christmas, we hope you’ll help us give a student on that waiting list the gift of education by becoming a monthly donor. When you create your recurring donation between today and New Year’s Eve, GlobalGiving will match your donation!

Giving just $10 a month for 12 months is enough to fund six months of a student’s education. Please consider giving what you can, starting this month, to help more students follow in Alex’s footsteps.

Not ready to commit to a monthly donation? No problem.  Your gift, whatever its size, will help students like Alex. Thanks so very much - and, if you’re celebrating this year, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!

This Christmas, give the gift of security

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Over the last year, your donations have given vulnerable Filipino families the means to protect their communities from frequent floods.

The boats you’ve funded have helped kids like 2-month-old Erica Mae escape safely when the waters rose. Those boats have also given countless moms and dads the peace of mind that comes with knowing that, if it all goes wrong, someone will be there to lend a helping hand.

But this Christmas there are still too many communities where rescue team leaders like Romeo lack a boat.

Romeo is almost 60, but he’s a long way from retiring. When the floods come, he enters the flood waters to ensure that none of his neighbors become trapped by the rising waters. If they have, he evacuates them in his boat.

But while Romeo’s neighbors are safe, many others aren’t because their community rescue teams are still without a boat. You can change that.

This Christmas, you can give a vulnerable family the gift of safety by setting up a monthly donation. When you create your recurring donation between today and New Year’s Eve, GlobalGiving will match your donation!

A sustainable Christmas at HTDC

Christmas is a time of fun and games for the kids
Christmas is a time of fun and games for the kids

Fantastic news! Since our last update, generous donors just like you gave a wonderful $5,000 to help the HTDC orphanage launch its own small business selling chicken eggs.

The profits from those eggs will help the orphanage’s leaders give children like Gusline a secure future. Like so many of the kids in the orphanage’s care, Gusline’s parents abandoned her. There is no record of her birth or her early childhood. Without the orphanage, she would be homeless, completely undocumented, and vulnerable.

But in the orphanage’s care, she’s blossomed into a healthy, happy four year old girl who loves dresses and playing with her brother Isaac.

The orphanage is working toward self-sufficiency, but on their own the chicken eggs will only yield a small profit. They need both the egg business and the bus business to cut their dependence on international aid in half.

This Christmas, you can give Gusline and all the children in the orphanage’s care the gift of security by setting up a recurring donation. When you create your recurring donation between today and New Year’s Eve, GlobalGiving will match your donation!

Your gift of just $10 a month will bring us ever closer to the self-sufficient HTDC that the orphanage leaders envision.
