Mission

The mission of the Sierra Gorda is to guide and coordinate the activities of its member organizations responsible for the conservation, restoration and sustainable development of the Sierra Gorda region and the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Grupo Ecologico Sierra Gorda, the founding member organization of the Alliance, guides the work of the Alliance's partner organizations in: a) educating for a sustainable future; b) organizing community action and cross-sector cooperation; c) adopting holistic land management; d) promoting management of solid waste and recyclables; e) raising awareness and civic participation; f) bundling and communicating best practices; and g) generating a significant social return on investment.

Programs

The Sierra Gorda Ecological Group and the civil alliance member organizations have established deep roots of trust, credibility and cooperation that have fostered new and sustainable lifestyle choices that are alleviating poverty, improving food and bioregional security, replanting forests, creating new micro-enterprise opportunities, shifting rural agriculture and land use towards holistic and organic practices, opening up new tourism products and services, and improving living standards to the 630+ communities located within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Every person or organization that supports or partners with the Alliance member organizations and every tourist that visits the Biosphere and the Sierra Gorda region contributes to growing the region's sustainable and virtuous 'triple bottom line' of planet, people and prosperity. Community Environmental Education, participatory awareness raising with 18,000 students in 170 schools throughout the region. The Sierra Gorda Earth Center is a training center to replicate proven methodologies, tools, and strategies in different subjects from experts in the field to community and governmental stakeholders, NGOs, students, teachers and concerned groups. Community management of solid wastes and the operation of 115 recycle collection centers by committees formed by women. Development of an economy for conservation by including the participation of 135 micro-operators in the Sierra Gorda Tourism Destination. Public relations and management: a team to write proposals, conduct workshops, national and international outreach, etc.
