In Devdaha a major means of poverty alleviation is microfinance activities. Local people believe that there is a need for saving and keeping the flow of money in the community. Financial Service Association (FSA), a microfinance system, was introduced in the area. Through FSA they have developed a fund of one million NRs. (US $ 14,300). By using their own resources, local people operate small enterprises such as a dairy, a market and sewing that result in a growth of entrepreneurship. (view small | med | large | orig)

Against Cultural Odds Women Start Cooperative

Against Cultural Odds Women Start Cooperative
Dressed in celebratory green saris with red blouses, 75 women return from Annual Cooperative Day in Kathmandu in an open-backed Lorrie, standing and sitting on their 2-hour ride. A significant culture change is occurring as these women have formed a coop to sell their harvest directly rather than go through middlemen. Starting with a small micro grant 4 years ago there is now a good-sized two-story building and 400 members of the Women’s Agricultural Cooperative. (view small | med | large | orig)
