New Community for Children

New Community for Children (NCFC) provides children and youth with learning experiences that build up their academic, social, and creative skills. We believe that excellent educational opportunities are the key to helping families break out of the poverty cycle. We offer creative hands-on learning in our after school program, and advocate for healthy families and challenging schools to support that goal.

Get Moving, Get Going. Summer 2011

We are gearing up for Get Moving, Get Going. Summer 2011 at New Community for Children. Which is building on last year’s successful My Community, My Garden program, this year’s six-week experience is geared towards getting students moving towards their personal success. Students entering Kinder-garten through 4th grade will enjoy academic enrichment in mathematics, literacy, and social enrichment through an array of field trips and partnerships that are certain to keep them active and engaged. New Community for Children has partnered with the United Way National Capital Area to bring the Fun, Fly & Fit program. This is a youth fitness movement developed to help combat the childhood obesity crisis in our region. The goal is to help kids and their caregivers make good nutritional decisions and motivate children to play, exercise, and have fun. Students will also continue working on the art and science of gardening as they plant and harvest herbs and vegetables on-site.

Our older students, entering 5th through 8th grade, will be engaged on their future goals and plans for college and career. They will learn about the college application process and will visit local colleges. New Community for Children’s mission is to support kids and ensure that they can make the most of learning in school. Towards that end 7th graders will leave the summer with an individualized plan for applying to high schools with strong college prep programs. Our 8th graders will create a high school success plan to include academic and enrich-ment goals.

We are excited about our partnership with City Blossoms. With leadership from this local organization, our middle school students will work on nearby Marion Street Garden and will create a business plan for selling goods from the garden. Enrichment activities will include cook-ing, language arts, science, and arts.

All that being said we are facing a loss of funding from the District.  Your support makes this six-week highly engaging academic and social enrichment summer program to 95 kids free of charge possible.

Please consider supporting New Community for Children's 2011 summer program.

 Thank you!
