Edesia, Inc.

Edesia's mission is to treat and prevent malnutrition for the world's most vulnerable children; our vision is a world in which all people have access to the basic human right of food and nutrition. We are committed to assuring that vulnerable individuals no longer suffer and die needlessly from malnutrition - a completely preventable condition. We treat all children as our own, and produce for them the lifesaving tools they need to overcome malnutrition and thrive. We act now, because the cost of inaction is too great.

You helped us reach 283,540 malnourished children

A little boy in Burkina Faso receives Plumpy
A little boy in Burkina Faso receives Plumpy'Nut

The Sahel region of Africa is vast, spanning nine countries—Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, The Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal. In the attached video, Fabienne Pompey, of the World Food Programme, reminds us that there are five million children younger than five in the region who urgently need help recovering from severe malnutrition.

No single organization can reach all five million children alone, but we can each do our part. Your donations to Edesia help us to send more supplies of Plumpy'Nut and Plumpy'Sup to our humanitarian partners, which means more children can be reached.

Here is an update on how many cartons we have shipped to the Sahel region since the start of 2014:

  • Burkina Faso: 18,190 cartons of Plumpy'Nut/RUTF - enough to treat 18,190 children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM).
  • Cameroon: 5,500 cartons of Plumpy'Nut - enough to treat 5,500 children with SAM; 33,350 cartons of Plumpy'Sup - enough to treat 83,825 children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM).
  • Chad: 15,000 cartons of Plumpy'Nut - enough to treat 15,000 children with SAM.
  • Mali: 18,300 cartons of Plumpy'Nut - enough to treat 18,300 children with SAM.
  • Mauritania: 2,300 cartons of Plumpy'Sup - enough to treat 4,600 children with MAM; 2,300 cartons of Plumpy'Nut - enough to treat 2,300 children with SAM.
  • Niger: 4,600 cartons of Plumpy'Sup, enough to treat 4,600 children with MAM.

All of this adds up to Edesia manufacturing and shipping nutritious food aid to 283,540 children in the Sahel region.

Thank you so much for your support, which makes our efforts on behalf of these children all the more possible.

Update from Uganda

Ekitobeero distribution in rural Uganda
Ekitobeero distribution in rural Uganda

Edesia is very proud be partnering with the Millennium Villages Project to help enhance nutrition for young children living in rural Uganda.

Well nourished children, especially in the first 1,000 days of life, from conception to the age of two, will grow to their full height and cognitive potential. This leads to lifelong success, in terms of better outcomes in school and less frequent visits to the health clinic.

Just to give you a brief update on the project you so generously supported, the first shipment of Ekitobeero was delivered to the villages in January of this year. I'm attaching a photo of the distribution process.

As you can imagine, education is absolutley the key to the success of any nutritional program, which is why I also want to share that there were 68 community health workers trained on how to mix Ekitobeero in with other foods and then explain this process to parents.

We are so grateful for your support of this important project, which has the potential to strengthen not only 300 children in Uganda, but the community as a whole. Thank you again.

Update on the Central African Republic

Robust supplies of Plumpy
Robust supplies of Plumpy'Nut are needed in CAR

Today I wanted to share with you a brief update on what we've been able to accomplish for the Central African Republic this year. In January, UNICEF in the Central African Republic received 3,740 boxes of Plumpy'Nut from Edesia's factory in Providence, Rhode Island.

This is enough to potentially treat 3,740 severely malnourished children. It's an incredible, miraculous equation. One box = one life. The 150 sachets inside each red and white box provide enough nourishement to bring a child on the brink of starvation back to good health in about seven weeks.

As you may have seen in the news, the situation in the Central African Republic could not be more dire. We hope that you continue to support the work of Edesia, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, Doctors Without Borders, and other nonprofit organizations who are all working together to bring health, hope, and safety back to this troubled nation.

Raising awarness about the situation is so important, and I thank you in advance for telling your family, friends, and colleagues that the children of CAR are in desperate need of the world's attention.
