Edesia, Inc.

Edesia's mission is to treat and prevent malnutrition for the world's most vulnerable children; our vision is a world in which all people have access to the basic human right of food and nutrition. We are committed to assuring that vulnerable individuals no longer suffer and die needlessly from malnutrition - a completely preventable condition. We treat all children as our own, and produce for them the lifesaving tools they need to overcome malnutrition and thrive. We act now, because the cost of inaction is too great.

"Soon he will be running..."

Little boy eating Plumpy
Little boy eating Plumpy'Nut in a Niger clinic

In today's update I wanted to share with you a new UNICEF video that highlights our PlumpyField partner in Niger, STA, and how the Plumpy'Nut they make is having a tremendous impact locally. STA, like us, manufactures Plumpy'Nut in order to reverse the effects of severe acute malnutrition in children under the age of five. As you will see in this video, their impact in reducing child malnutrition rates in Niger cannot be understated.

There are many things that I enjoyed about this video, including that our Executive Director, Navyn Salem, was in Niger while it was being filmed, but most of all, I loved watching a little boy named Hassan eat Plumpy'Nut by the handful and hearing his mother say:

"I'm so happy because I can see my child getting stronger and soon he will be running."

Yes, I thought to myself, this says it all, so simply and so beautifully: "soon he will be running." Because of STA's work, and our work in Rhode Island, and the work of 11 other PlumpyField factories around the world, soon, so many more children will be running toward their mothers' arms and even farther toward their futures.

Since Edesia started making Plumpy'Nut in March 2010, we have delivered about 250,000 boxes of Plumpy'Nut - enough to potentially fully treat 250,000 children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition - to our humanitarian partners. Most recently we have shipped Plumpy'Nut to Burkina Faso and Chad, where the need is great.

Thank you again for generously supporting our Global Giving project and our ongoing efforts to get more children and families running again throughout the Sahel.

Plumpy'Nut on its way to Ethiopia

Plumpy
Plumpy'Nut "Miracle" in a packet

I just wanted to send a brief update - from our Providence, Rhode Island factory - to let you know that 48,000 boxes of Plumpy'Nut are to be shipped from our warehouse to Ethiopia from now until October. This is enough of our peanut-based, therapeutic food to reach as many as 48,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Everyone who works at Edesia feels grateful to be part of the manufacturing process that helps get Plumpy'Nut into the hands of children - through our humanitarian partners on the ground, who are on the frontlines of saving young lives every day.

It's interesting to note that Ethiopia, in the heart of the Horn of Africa, has made remarkable progress over recent years in reducing child mortality rates. As you can see in the attached PDF document, in 1990, some 198 children out of 1,000 in Ethiopia died before the age of five. In 2011, that number dropped to 77, and progress continues. We like to think that stronger community-based health and nutrition programs, which include therapeutic foods like Plumpy'Nut, are indeed helping and having an impact.

A heartfelt thank you, from all of us at Edesia, for your continued support of our project that is helping give children and families health and hope.

Changing the world, one life at a time

Sending off another shipment to the DR Congo
Sending off another shipment to the DR Congo

In January, our shipping manager, Andrew (pictured above), helped send out over 3,250 boxes of Plumpy'Nut to the DR Congo. Behind every person is an amazing life story. At the age of 22, Andrew was forced to flee violence in Sierra Leone with two of his sisters. They lived as refugees for over three years before the miraculous news came that a family in the United States wanted to be their sponsor.

While living in refugee camps, Andrew learned how to suppress hunger and go without food in his stomach for days. He heard the sound of grieving mothers in tents down the way who'd lost their children, because of the illnesses they could not defeat without the nutrients that make a state of health possible.

So when Andrew sends out any shipment on behalf of Edesia, it's not just a job that needs to be done, but a calling to end the suffering that he knows by heart. And he knows that Sierra Leone refugees are no different than refugees living in the DR Congo. Everyone wants peace, good health, and a reason to have hope.

With the latest shipments to the DR Congo, about 3,250 children with severe acute malnutrition will get the hope they need for a future. It seems like such a small number, when we think of the great need among children from families who have been displaced by the ongoing conflicts in the DR Congo (see report link below), but we do sincerely believe that the ripple effects of helping these children will be felt for generations to come.

Thank you for your ongoing caring and support and for believing - like we do - that the world changes, one life at a time.
