Edesia, Inc.

Edesia's mission is to treat and prevent malnutrition for the world's most vulnerable children; our vision is a world in which all people have access to the basic human right of food and nutrition. We are committed to assuring that vulnerable individuals no longer suffer and die needlessly from malnutrition - a completely preventable condition. We treat all children as our own, and produce for them the lifesaving tools they need to overcome malnutrition and thrive. We act now, because the cost of inaction is too great.

Asante! (Thank you!)

Young Amadeus- one of the first patients
Young Amadeus- one of the first patients

Asante! Thanks to you we have accomplished the project goals and been a part of the healthy futures of so many at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute. Helping the children achieve a healthy nutritional status, has allowed them to continue their chemotherapy treatments and thrive.

A lot is changing for the young patients and their families and the future is looking bright. As we close out our project I wanted to share with you an excerpt from the latest update from Dr. Trish Scanlon and show how you have been a part of the success.

"Finally after struggling for more than 3 full years we managed to move the children from their old ward at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute to their shiny new home at the New Paediatric Complex at Muhimbili National Hospital (you can see the bright shiny rooms in the photo).

It's been a long tiring journey for all of us (see the photo) but finally we would like to welcome you to our wards – Upendo (Love) and Tumiani (Hope) (Ujasiri – strength will be our hostel in the very near future).Clean, bright, beautiful. It was worth the wait.

And already we are happy to report amazing progress in the care we are now able to provide to the children.

Young Amadeus (he is the one with the eye patch in the photo below) is one of our first patients. This little man has a huge personality and a terrible disease called Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. The treatment is extremely tough and very dangerous. But for the first time ever were have been able to give Amadeus his own room, daily tests and blood products without delays.

As a result, so far (fingers and toes crossed!!), he has done extremely well and has received the third of his extremely toxic rounds of chemotherapy with fewer problems than all previous cycles. He is not out of the woods yet but the move has given him the best possible chance.

We still have much to do but thank you once again for all your support. I hope you believe your contribution has in a very real way made this finally happen. Without all the support nothing would have changed. I urge you to stick with us. We are not finished yet but we are pleased with where things are going.

Yours happily and hopefully,

Trish Scanlon (known locally as Dr Twishi), May 2011"
