The Synthesis Collaborative

The Synthesis Collaborative is based in Rochester, New York. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity which endeavors to improve the health of communities in need using the tools of teleradiology and cloud computing. We also sponsor and support arts projects which have a community-wide scope. The spirit of disenfranchised communities often requires treatment as well. Our sponsorship of art in the public space will be our means of intervention.

Programs

The need for basic medical imaging in the developing world is ubiquitous and seemingly insurmountable. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 4 billion people lack access to one of the most widely utilized and fundamental tools for the diagnosis of disease, a chest x-ray. Understanding that there exists a growing disparity between the developing and industrialized worlds with regard to the provision of health care, we are seeking to link communities in need to healthcare providers, specifically radiologists, who can facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of conditions, such as TB and complications of HIV/AIDS. Our organization, The Synthesis Collaborative, is dedicated to exploring opportunities for the implementation of our teleradiology initiative IMPACT! (IMProving Access to Care by Teleradiology). Teleradiology is our core competency and the access to a network of volunteer radiologists willing to assist our endeavors a value-added asset. IMPACT! is comprised of hardware (x-ray imaging equipment) and software (cloud computing teleradiology platform) components. The hardware is a digital radiography system and the software is a internet-based custom teleradiology portal. Aside from the requisite hardware and software components, the strength of IMPACT! is the network of volunteer radiologists who have pledged to contribute their professional skills to this humanitarian effort. Their philanthropy simultaneously encourages and inspires. The Synthesis Collaborative serves those in need, knowing that we stand alongside many like-minded individuals. The WHIS-RAD digital radiography system has been deployed in several locations by our partner, WHITIA. The Synthesis Collaborative is working to bring our teleradiology solution to communities in need throughout the developing world. At present, basic radiographic imaging of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities is immediately possible with our system. Our teleradiology solution has the potential to make a significant change in the health status of a community. A healthy community is a healthy workforce...a productive community. A productive community can participate in locoregional commerce and, potentially, global exchange. In this way, once underserved communities can emerge as markets in their own right. We are also deeply committed to the idea of community spirit as a factor in social and mental wellness. We believe that art, particularly art in public spaces, has the power to uplift and inspire. Our street art program, Wall Therapy, has just completed its third year. We bring internationally recognized street artists to Rochester, NY (a city condemned as a part of the "rust belt" by many) to reinvigorate the communities surrounded by the murals. The art has been welcomed by the residents of these communities as well as others, and we envision bringing this public art to the sites of our teleradiology clinics as well.
