Bolivian Charity Foundation

Proyecto Horizonte is changing lives through education, healthcare, and community development. Proyecto Horizonte is passionate about giving the people, especially the children, a chance to further their horizon through education, health and community development. Our vision is to provide a well-structured base for sustainable development and act as a blueprint for other projects demonstrating the efficiency and success of a privately managed and organized initiative. We believe in the people of Mineros San Juan, Ushpa-Ushpa and their ability to develop towards a middle class community, and with our help become a model for other programmes faced with the same challenges.

Mission

Proyecto Horizonte is changing lives through education, healthcare, and community development. Proyecto Horizonte is passionate about giving the people, especially the children, a chance to further their horizon through education, health and community development. Our vision is to provide a well-structured base for sustainable development and act as a blueprint for other projects demonstrating the efficiency and success of a privately managed and organized initiative. We believe in the people of Mineros San Juan, Ushpa-Ushpa and their ability to develop towards a middle class community, and with our help become a model for other programmes faced with the same challenges.

Programs

Proyecto Horizonte is an integrated village development program, located in the outskirts of Cochabamba, Bolivia. It serves over 800 children, and its families, with a well-planned concept covering all aspects of life, including education, health care, and community development. The goal of the organization is to lift the area from being one of the poorest and most dangerous places in the region to an opportunity filled and safe sub-center of the city. Proyecto Horizonte is completely funded by private donors without any religious, political or other motive. Administrative costs of the project are below 0.5%. The community now contributes towards 15% of the budget, up from 5% at the start. Proyecto Horizonte aims to work primarily with local staff. Almost all employees are from Bolivia and many are from the actual community. International volunteers complete the team. The approach is holistic. Only if all aspects of the lives are covered, it can be ensured that the work effectively changes the living conditions of the community. The approach to microfinance which is used is far beyond traditional concepts; providing training, coaching and ongoing support to micro entrepreneurs instead of pure lending. The project was founded in 2004 by Christian Ruehmer as a private initiative with the objective of fighting poverty and improving human development. Since its establishment, Proyecto Horizonte has grown to include a day-care center, a primary, secondary and adult school, health center, community training programs including women groups and psychological support, sport and art activities, home improvement programs and microenterprise initiatives including an artisans group. It has 75 employees, all of them from Bolivia, as well as a number of international volunteers.
