Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, USA

SEDS is an independent, student-based organization which promotes the exploration and development of space. SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and inspiring people through our involvement in space-related projects. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space.

Increased Development and Outreach 2013

Hello SEDS Supporter!

Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) has had a very busy spring and summer making the most of the student availability and ensuring active membership. SEDS has seen an explosion in outreach since successfully completing funding of the Business Development and Public Outreach micro-project and this update will share with you some the highlights.

In May, SEDS-USA was able to attend and exhibit at the Space Tech Expo and International Space Development Conferences which were previously (briefly) written about. Since my last writing, SEDS was invited to the Green2Gold Tech Mixer and the AIAA SPACE 2013 Conference to help spread our message and promote student involvement. These invitations were received by engaging the public and members of these organizations at the conferences and only could have been achieved by getting us out there – so thank you for your support which allowed us this opportunity!

Attending these events has allowed us to spread the message of SEDS and attract the interest of the California State Education system leading to a request to distribute SEDS materials to 30+ universities across the state. Further, discussions have allowed us to develop a plan to distribute SEDS materials across the whole US for increased K-12 and University expansion. While attending these events, SEDS also drew some media attention and conducted video interviews with qbits.com and space.com to be posted later this year. Ensuring organizational progress, SEDS has started working relationships with AIAA, International Space School Educational Trust, the California Space Enterprise Center, SpaceUnited, among many others! We will be inviting these groups and their members to our national conference, SpaceVision 2013, which continues to make head way - Speakers are announced and registration is open. The Student NewSpace Buisiness Plan Competition to be held at SpaceVision 2013 has also been announced and has more than quadrupled the prizes for this year's competition as result of these outreach efforts.

SEDS Earth continues to develop following the conversation starting at UKSEDS’ conference earlier this year. The International Board has been meeting on a quarterly basis and has been determining the priorities for us to help each other and interact on an international level. For starters, we have started to revamp the SEDS Earth website to help new countries start SEDS Charters – we have been contacted by students interested to start in Japan, Korea, Czech Republic, and Turkey to name just a few. Be sure to check the SEDS Earth website out over the coming few months as we update and develop it!

I hope you share our excitement for these business developments at SEDS – USA! We could not have done it without the generosity we received through GlobalGiving and the GiveForYouth platform and cannot thank you enough for investing in the future of SEDS and students everywhere.  We have been working hard and have so much more to share; for a full stream of updates and to stay up to date, check us out on Facebook, Twitter, or at www.seds.org. If you have any questions or would like to engage SEDS, please feel free to contact us at info@seds.org.

From the current and future space passionate hearts of K-12 and university students everywhere, thank you for your support and helping us to create a better future!

Spring 2013 Growth at SEDS-USA

SEDS
SEDS's Shiny New Tradeshow Exhibit

Hello SEDS Donor!

Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) has seen terrific growth this quarter due in large part to the generosity we received through GlobalGiving and the GiveForYouth platform.  SEDS has been working hard on the eleven microprojects listed and I am happy to share with you a few of the most exciting updates!

In accordance with SEDS-USA's Strategic Plan for 2013-2022, there are three major goals the board has been dedicating its efforts to this Spring. One goal has been to attend at least one new major tradeshow or conference a year in order to reach new people and new growth prospects. With the funding provided through the Business Development and Public Outreach microproject SEDS was able to afford a new tradeshow exhibit and the registration fee for the Space Tech Expo held in Long Beach, CA May 21-23rd. The Space Tech Expo was a tremendous success: spreading awareness of SEDS to local high schools and universities, bringing in potential sponsors of SpaceVision and future National Projects, and establishing several new partnerships with the space industry in California. Overall, I would estimate that SEDS spoke to approximately 50 people a day at the Space Tech Expo.

On similar note, the funds generated helped SEDS-USA Chair, Michael Zwach, travel to Bristol, England to attend the 25th Anniversary of UKSEDS. These funds were provided on a cost share basis with Purdue University and has directly resulted in the growing communication of SEDS Earth once more. An SEDS Earth Project is now in the works, working to bring together over 5000 University students from 15 countries!

SEDS has made progress in organizing the 3rd annual Student NewSpace Business Plan Competition in partnership with the Space Frontier Foundation. In addition to seeking contributions from donors such as yourself, the executive board is working to secure sponsorship from Green2Gold, a project of the Environmental Education Group - a sponsor identified at the Space Tech Expo. We have recruited a staff member to manage this project on behalf of SEDS and we are looking forward to officially announcing the competition at the NewSpace 2013 conference which runs July 25-27 at Silicon Valley.

The High Altitude Balloon micro-project, has made great strides in developing a project to reach and influence K-12 students. In seeking for partners to help SEDS reach this demographic, the executive board has been in discussion with SpaceUnited, a relatively new space organization which focuses on humanitarian efforts space access can provide. Aligning a goal to reduce the costs of High Altitude Balloon kits and preparing lesson plans for teachers, SEDS is working to inspire students young about the edge of the earth and where space begins.

This has only just touched on the most active of projects at SEDS in the works with your help. For a full stream of updates and to stay up to date check us out on Facebook, Twitter, or at www.seds.org. If you have any questions or would like to engage SEDS, please feel free to contact us at info@seds.org.

From the current and future space passionate hearts of K-12 and university students everywhere, thank you for your support and helping us to create a better future!
