Mission

The mission of The Ratiu Center for Democracy (CRD) is to promote democracy as a way of life by encouraging research, promoting learning, informing others and practically applying democratic values and behaviors locally, nationally and internationally, so that as many as possible may benefit. The CRD was launched in July 2004 and operates a variety of democracy-building and community outreach programs including an anti-trafficking campaign, a national online electoral-promise monitoring campaign, and youth outreach initiatives inclusive of a volunteer center, a debate club, and a theater workshop. At the CRD, we believe that democracy allows us the freedom to form our own beliefs. CRD programs stimulate the individual by demonstrating values we consider to be essential in a democratic society. Within a democratic system, responsibility is a way of exercising freedom. We are free to be responsible for ourselves and towards others. This combination of self-care and relationship-building creates a healthy network of engaged individuals capable of contributing to society.

Programs

The Ratiu Center for Democracy is responsible for administering several programs dedicated to democracy-building and community outreach. These programs include: 1. The 'Not for sale - Choose for your own sake' anti- human trafficking program, whose main focus is the prevention of human trafficking in Romania. This is accomplished by awareness-raising activities at the local, national, and international levels. Through the victim assistance objective of this program, local survivors of human trafficking are also supported in the form of social work assistance and facilitation of legal, psychological, educational, vocational, and medical services. One of the current program goals is to create an emergency shelter in Cluj County for victims of trafficking and to have the ability to provide a more diversified set of services to survivors. 2. The 'Your Vote, Your Future - It Matters!' campaign, whose focus is on electoral-promise monitoring and encouraging Romanian citizens to vote responsibly. The campaign utilizes an online platform to collect campaign promises made by candidates during local and national elections. The goal is to hold the winning candidates accountable, for their entire term, to the promises they made during the elections. 3. The "Ion Ratiu" Theater Workshop, whose mission is to provide volunteers of all ages with the opportunity to find "their voice" and self-confidence through entertaining productions performed for communities with limited access to cultural and artistic events and to reawaken creativity and art appreciation in rural communities. The objectives of this program are to increase the number of volunteers willing to participate in workshops; prepare young volunteers to lead working groups; create artistic productions that directly involve volunteers for the benefit of the community; raise awareness about multicultural issues and taboo subjects through theatrical productions; and encourage students to create theatrical clubs as an extra-curricular activity. 4. The "Ion Ratiu" Debate Club, whose mission is to improve communication abilities and promote democratic behavior among young people by building an academic debate community. The objectives of this club are to learn and practice Karl Popper and Westminster debate formats; train and develop club members' oratorical style; facilitate mutual understanding and exchange of ideas among young people from Turda, Romania, and abroad; and to shape the attitudes and behaviors of young people through interaction with leading Romanian public figures. 5. The "Ion Ratiu" Volunteer Center, which promotes the importance and power of volunteering in Turda and assists in helping volunteers build a long-term commitment to community service. The program consists of about 80 volunteers and helps to organize all of the events and activities implemented by the CRD. The objectives of the volunteer program are to serve the community; develop and train volunteer teams to meet international quality standards; and to create strong partnerships with national and international NGOs.
