Hope of Children and Women Victims of Violence

Hope of Children and Women Victims of Violence's (HOCW) mission is to provide services that ease the transition of asylum seekers and refugees into Ugandan society and prepare them for a permanent placement in Uganda or for asylum in Europe of the US. Currently most refugees served by HOCW are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Many refugees arrive in Uganda alone or with partially intact families. Most leave the majority of their belongings in their home country. Almost none speak English or Luganda, the languages of business and commerce in Uganda. And many have physical and emotional issues typical of war and conflict. HOCW does it's best to address all of these issues.

Programs

HOCW programs focus on education, social and economic development and health. In the adult education classes at HOCW, volunteers help these refugees learn English, facilitating their integration into society, opening the doors to jobs, and having a lot of fun along the way. Income generating projects help to create independence while building self-confidence. In regard to social and economic development, we warmly welcome volunteers who may have skills to teach our students, such as handicrafts. These hand-crafts can be sold within the community or through volunteers once they return to their home countries. HOCW has already had great success with paper bead jewelry. Medical volunteers are sent to local health centers that serve a large population of vulnerable people and refugees. These clinics are bustling places that provide a multitude of services from HIV AIDS testing to emergency medicine to prenatal care. Volunteers may also organize and lead seminars that educate our community about HIV (awareness, prevention, and living with the disease); sexual and physical violence; communicable diseases; and nutrition.
