First Shipment of Pad Kits to Uganda

Dear Friends,

We are excited to share that the first shipment of Pad Kits has been sent to Uganda.  I am attaching some pictures to show you what they look like and what they include.  These will be given to the first group of girls as well as used as a physical model.

Our Gratitude to Dea Viola of the Baby Flamingo Co for the design and manufacture of the kits.  Our goal was to design a kit that was both simple and inexpensive to make and could be easily reproduced with locally available materials.

We would also like to thank you for your support.  Our project here on GlobalGiving is off to a good start.  Our next step will be to purchase some treadle-type sewing machines and begin to teach the girls in the vocational program at Future Victory School rudimentary sewing skills.

With Gratitude,

Christopher Buck

All work and no play...

Soccer Balls for FVS
Soccer Balls for FVS

Hi,

This is just a quick report to share with you that we sent the children at the Vocational Training Center a shipment of soccer balls for their recreation time. Soccer is a great passion in Uganda and all of Africa.  When we learned that the children's request for Christmas was a new ball, we pitched in to send them a case of 25, along with a ball pump.

Although this report is not specifically about an aspect about the work being done at the Vocational Training Center, we do believe in a holistic approach to education, and structured physical activity is an important part of a child's development.  And besides, there is that old adage about, "All work and no play...."

On another note, we have opened a new project on GlobalGiving that will expand the Vocational Training Center to include other skills besides the Model Farm and Livestock Management.  We will be teaching seamstress skills as well.  Please visit "Keep 1000 Ugandan Girls in School" at http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/pads-for-schoolgirls to connect with and read more about this project.  We hope you will join us there as well.

Much Metta,

Christopher Buck

Learning Landscape Completed!

The Learning Landscape has been constructed at Future Victory School and the children are loving it!  Future Victory School is only the second school in sub-Saharan Africa to host one of these multifunctional educational playgrounds.

Construction of the Learning Landscape is done will all recycled materials.  Because of its location, the recycled tires used in the Learning Landscape were driven in on motorcycles.  Construction was done completely with hand tools.

What is unique about the Learning Landscape is that while it can be also used for physical activities, the games designed for the playground teach math and critical thinking skills.

In the words of Wilson Ngobi, the Administrative Director of Future Victory School: “The children are so excited!  You have transformed FVS!”

Our Gratitude to all that participated to make this project a success!
