Mission

Equip Manyatta is a charity organization created to assist a community-based organization in Western Kenya, the Manyatta Youth Resource Center (MYRC). The officers of Equip Manyatta were instrumental in assisting community members in Kisumu to establish the MYRC. The mission of the MYRC is to increase opportunities for youth living in the slums of Manyatta, Kisumu to participate in sporting activities and the performing arts, to provide health education, support school attendance, and to build the organization into a self sustaining enterprise. Manyatta is the largest slum in Western Kenya and is home to over 60,000 people living in an area of five square miles with little in the way of urban infrastructure. Kisumu is the third largest city in Kenya, with roughly 578,000 people. Other goals include providing activities that engage youth in positive endeavors to avoid delinquency, encouraging school attendance and fostering peaceful forms of communication to avoid the sort of vicious violence experienced in the area after the last national election.

Programs

Equip Manyatta provides support for the full array of MYRC programs plus some additional charity activities. MYRC activities include: soccer teams that engage more than 100 participants in Under-12, Under-14, Under 16, and Mixed Age Ladies Teams, which will soon expand to include an Under-18 team. Daily soccer practice and weekly games against other teams registered with the Kisumu Youth Football Association (KYFA) plus donations of shoes, uniforms, balls and first-aid supplies. MYRC also hosts regular tournaments, including with teams from as far away as Nairobi. Food is provided for game day participants and every effort is made to ensure that all team members are enrolled and attending school, including assistance with school fees if necessary. The Performing Arts Section has several programs, including Music, Dance, and Drama. The Performing Arts head helps artists record and distribute CDs and promotes concerts to raise awareness. One of the dance teams is currently in the finals of a nationwide annual dance contest. Dance team styles include Modern, Abstract, Break, and Traditional. The drama group focuses on HIV/AIDS awareness and other public health messages such as Drug and Alcohol pieces and performs at local markets, games and other venues. Supplementing school fees, including purchase of uniforms and books, is an ongoing MYRC program with some students receiving major support and others receiving relatively small amounts needed to supplement what the family is able to provide. Business plan development and implementation is an ongoing part of MYRC activities. For instance, equipment is purchased and then rented to users, with profits going to fund MYRC activities. MYRC also has an office where youth can come to connect and where MYRC Board members and team coaches can hold meetings as necessary. MYRC provides a small stipend for officers, coaches, and section heads. The 4 officers of Equip Manyatta are volunteers. Equip Manyatta also provides food, shelter, and other basic needs for a small number of orphans in Kisumu.
