Mission

Founded in 2010, GlobeMed at the University of Chicago is one of 55 branches of the wider GlobeMed organization, which partners college students with grassroots leaders worldwide to combat healthcare inequity. GlobeMed at the University of Chicago works alongside the Asociacion de Personas Afectadas por Tuberculosis del Peru (ASPAT-Peru) in the poorest districts of Lima, Peru and the nearby seaport of Callao. GlobeMed at the University of Chicago and ASPAT-Peru are in the third year of their partnership, have contributed almost $21,000 to the fight against tuberculosis, and are continuing to improve the quality of life of tuberculosis patients, to alleviate the stigma they face, and to increase education and prevention across metropolitan Lima and Callao.

Programs

GlobeMed at the University of Chicago works alongside its partner, the Asociacion de Personas Afectadas por Tuberculosis del Peru (ASPAT-Peru), to improve the quality of life of tuberculosis patients, to alleviate the stigma they face, and to increase education and prevention across metropolitan Lima and the nearby seaport of Callao. In the first year of our partnership, we provided patients with basic necessities to help them successfully complete a full TB treatment regimen. We raised nearly $7,500 and sponsored a food basket program, wherein patients were given nutritional supplements every month for the first six months of treatment, when they are at the highest risk of failing to complete their treatments. Last year, our project aimed to target the underlying cause of TB: impoverishment. To that end, GlobeMed at the University of Chicago worked in conjunction with ASPAT to develop a series of business seminars, enabling patients to develop the skills and self-confidence to start their own micro-businesses. 8 micro-businesses have launched so far, with 9 more to follow. This year, we are implementing a pilot program wherein nutritional breakfasts are provided to patients at a health center in Lima, Peru. These breakfasts will provide much-needed nourishment while patients are recovering from a difficult disease, and reduce the harsh side effects of treatment, improving patients' compliance with their full treatment regimens.
