Programs

BULGARIAN NATIONAL ENGLISH SPELLING BEE he Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee was developed and started in 2011 by two Peace Corps volunteers. They worked in collaboration with more than 50 other Peace Corps volunteers serving in communities, big and small, where more than 1000 students participated. More than 4500 students from 200 schools participated in 2012 Spelling Bee. Similar to Spelling Bees in the US, the competitors must spell words out loud letter by letter and are eliminated for misspelling a word. Students from the ages of 9 to 14, working with a predetermined list of words, prepare for their local, school competitions. During the 2012/2013 school year, the bee's goal will be to expand and include 300 schools. In addition to increasing the number of schools over the next year the CORPluS team is planning to implement new teacher training events, regional-team training sessions and to extend and enhance competition preparation. The Spelling Bee is organized in partnership with Peace Corps Bulgaria, but open to all public schools. For more info visit www.spellingbee-bg.com CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION The competition started in Bulgaria in 2011 when over 300 imaginative, clever English essays were submitted from students all over Bulgaria; in 2012, there were more than 800! The competition is open to students from 6th to 12th grade that are given one hour on a certain date to respond to one of several creative, unusual themes (different for each grade level). Over the course of the hour, students may not consult dictionaries, grammar references, the Internet, other students, etc. The goal is instead to create their own unique pieces of writing (in English), to think "outside the box". SMALL COMMUNITY PROJECTS PROGRAM The Small Community Projects Program is aimed to support the administrative and project capacity building of needy communities, as well as encouraging local partnerships and mobilizing local communities for community action. CORPluS works with such communities and helps them develop their project capacity - to acquire PDM knowledge and skills through trainings, development of project proposals and implementation of small community projects. The PDM regional trainings are followed by the opportunity to access a Small Grants Scheme through development of project proposals, using the acquired PDM skills. CORPluS reaches out to all community-development participants. Special attention is given to small communities in the least developed regions of the country.
