Donkeys and Cats and Dogs, Oh My!

Dr. Ingrid and "Panterita" - the little panther
Dr. Ingrid and "Panterita" - the little panther

Paige is GlobalGiving's Champion for Customer Bliss in our office in Washington, DC. During a trip to Colombia, she had the chance to visit some of GlobalGiving's projects. Here is her postcard from the field.

About a year ago FRAD popped up on my radar at GlobalGiving when they won the 2013 photo contest with Bimbi, and adorable three legged dog. I was quickly sucked into their parade of photos of very adorable animals that they are caring for in the city of Turbaco just outside Cartagena. So when I realized I was able to visit FRAD during my trip to Colombia, I was very excited!

I was picked up at a shopping mall in Cartagena and then we headed out to the quiet city of Turbaco. First stop was to the school that partners with FRAD. They have a partnership where the students volunteer time at the shelter and collect pet food for the FRAD’s animals. I was immediately impressed with the students – they were smart, spoke beautiful English, and seemed engaged in the work at FRAD. The school itself has several dogs, all rescued, that wander the grounds and lounge in the shade. It’s clear upon arrival that this is a place that cares about the environment and the animals that live in it.

After meeting with the classes, we went to visit the FRAD property. My first impression? Greenery. And the howling of 100s of dogs. And indeed that’s what was going on! The property is wide and covered in leafy shade. Tola the donkey wanders freely, cantering around in excitement at visitors. Dr. Ingrid then came out, followed by a crowd of dogs and Tola to greet us. Dr. Ingrid loves animals and has a special connection with each dog, cat, and creature on the property. She is a veterinarian who believes strongly that these animals – some of them coming from abusive homes, some injured in the streets, some abandoned – deserve a safe, clean, and welcoming home from the streets. Colombia has a problem with stray animals, and the government is promoting adoption and ensuring pets are vaccinated and taken care of as a way to counter this problem. This is where shelters like FRAD’s come in.

What was readily apparently after visiting and hanging out with the over 100 dogs and over 100 cats, is that FRAD is in desperate need of a new place. “In the rainy season, the grounds flood,” I’m told. The moisture causes many of the animals to come down with respitory issues, a further strain on the organization. We sat in the main house (where the cats are sheltered) and discussed what they needed, how their current housing situations is affecting their work, all while “Hannah Montana” curled up purring on my lap. Cats are adopted significantly less than the dogs at the shelter, so many of them never get to leave the shelter. Personally? If Hannah Montana had fit in my backpack I would have taken her home in a heart beat.

After the visit we left in a flurry of barks and donkey brays (Tola and I became fast friends), a great end to some amazing site visits in Colombia.

Seven years seeking to raise awareness

Hello everybody and followers through GlobalGiving¡¡
How time has passed, isnt  it? And yet we continue in our mission, dreams haven´t stopped, although we raised 17 years in April, this makes us think ,first , how long it has taken to raise awareness in a city where even talking about animal welfare, it becomes weird,  hard to understand and being in the place of those whom doesn t have voice.

I want to remind you that we haven´t  made major investments in our home, shelter where live more than 160 animals that we have, as we are looking to have a house to rent while the goal is to buy one home where we all have to be free from the stress of a moving.
The money resources we have gotten from GolbalGiving, It  has been saved, we have asked the GlobalGiving team, please don´t send us more resources over this huge and important project, until the money is complete. What do you think of this? It was the best choice, isnt  it? We must wait

But even  you are asking:  what happened to the rest of money for  dogs and cats houses? Well,  I remember  you, this has been saved in our account bank, because we only want to invest for a new permanent home, thus make an investment and then have to destroy everything to move again, it is very expensive, and we must care every dollar  that we have,  for the good and safety of our animals.

Godparents and Friends: Hero of Silence
But thanks to our silent heroes, many of them have thanked them with their own name and others under anonymity, we have obtained materials help to improve the condition of our animals, and more in this rainy season, which absolutely everything our flooded home, having to develop strategies to protect water animals, for example, they donated huge tents, plastic and other materials to protect the space where cats, dogs live and of course our beautiful donkey, Tola

A sincere thanks to the volunteers

Before to say good bye, I want to thank those who also behind a phone, a computer, a visit animals, a car, give us the most valuable without demanding money in exchange: Volunteers, they who with their love, generosity and desire to change the world, sometimes cruel and humiliating that must support hundreds of animals in the city of Cartagena. THANKS VOLUNTEERS FOR THEIR WORK

WAITING TIME: THREE TIMES FOR OUR ANIMALS RESCUED

Puppy Dog
Puppy Dog

I know many expected our news since the last time we wrote, we had very good reasons and we did, we told you of new  homes for dogs and  will soon be ready, the enclosed safety for animals especially dogs didnt escape and avoid they were hit by visitor´s car.  But since that time over we have had  several situations where we want to tell, let's start:

OUR LAST CHANCE, IF YOU AGREE

What would happen if we had $ 2.213, 75, donated for you to invest in improving existing roof covering the area of dogs and cats , improve roof of Tola donkey , which currently and fortunately sleeps in the garage of the small clinic FRAD has , on the other hand , if we had to move because the owner of the farm house ask for more money for rent? What would dear donor do, You have supported on our projects? I have a single answer: Put this money in our bank account to invest in a new home , as we have just 3 months to move (according to Colombian law , is the minimum time that gives us the owner to do ) our  lawyers say it is more time, but this is what we don´t have . We can´t tell a lie : That we have built a beautiful roof, or bought more homes when it is not true.  I can only tell you that every dollar we receive is for us a treasure , and any wrong decision can affect animals and its director, Dr. Ingrid Hernández , who is at last who protects over the more than 158 animals we have at the moment, so we have made this decision, save the money and wait until we find a new and better home for rent , a situation that has been difficult but hopefully not impossible . If any of you are not happy with our decision and your donation , you can call the office GlobalGiving have your money reallocated to another project through GlobalGiving Guarantee . I ask this first time for you to put in our place.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND , SOME HISTORY TO UNDERSTAND

Since 2012 , animals rescued  went to live in the city to the country , it was a sudden change , was first in Arjona, city of Bolivar animals suffered by the amount of mud, dust , sun and in some cases, enormous snakes ( Mapana ) life-threatening , and now after a year , moved to Turbaco, another city,  another farm with  different weather, rained more,  but you could finally see all dogs , cats and donkeys ( Moises was still alive , the donkey , boyfriend Tola ) , calm, finally seemed to be the time it deserved, because we didnt have problems with owners and neighbors. But all is not bliss in a shelter for animals rescued, and therefore have a small clinic, but have increased the number of abandoned animals and sponsors that we had been reduced to just three. we who are healed, saved, and protect these animals, then who will?. We ask you this second time to reflect

THE THIRD AND LAST TIME: TIME TO HELP

We invite you to join us even if you want, visit our new project : A HOME FOR 158 ANIMALS RESCUED (#16333), it searches no longer have a house to rent, but buy a permanent home, it will take many months, but worth it. I hope you join us, and translating a bit more of what you want to say more 158 animals: THOUSANDS OF THANKS . WITHOUT YOU,  WE COULDN´T HAVE DONE  AND YET WE DO: FEED FOR A YEAR  FOR CATS, DOGS AND DONKEY AND BUY SOME HOUSES FOR DOGS. A SIMPLE BUT HUGE THANKS FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
