The White House features the GWS Green Team!

Garden Raising
Garden Raising

Well spring is upon us, that is for sure! We have so many exciting events this season. We just successfully completed our 5th annual SomerGreen Festival, in partnership with the City of Somerville, our first ever Boston Tree Party apple tree planting, our river clean-up with the Mystic River Watershed Association and the Friends of the Mystic River, a garden raising, and a bike drive with Bikes Not Bombs. And that was just on ONE day! So thank you to everyone who has participated so far, and welcome to all our new partners who are about to embark upon greening initiatives with Groundwork Somerville. Read on to find out about some upcoming events this spring.

Every day I question if we are doing the right thing to have so many events - yes, it makes sense to work collaboratively to do clean-ups and bike drives, and youth-led gardens. But are we being noticed for the work that we do? As an Executive Director, I constantly analyze this. And you know what? We finally did get noticed! Yes folks - THE White House Blog did a post about Groundwork Somerville! Check it out here, and make sure to email the White House and let them know that you support GWS. A Major thank you to our partners at GlobalGiving - the White House found us through their website.

Thank you for all of your support and please keep giving!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lawrence

Outgoing Executive Director

Maple Syrup Project ramping up!

Thanks for your interest in the Somerville Maple Syrup Project, here are some updates and reminders that take us through the end of the season:

  • **Last chance to order a Limited Edition T-Shirt!**  Please email me your size by Tuesday (tomorrow) at 8pm to get the 2011 edition! They cost $12, and all proceeds will support the Maple Syrup Project.  The t-shirts are in standard unisex sizes from children's small through adult extra large and are maroon with goldenrod yellow ink. They feature art from several artists (of all ages) illustrating their favorite parts of the Somerville sugaring experience.
  • Thanks to the over 40 supporters who attended the tapping event: the gorgeous weather rewarded us, causing sap to flow out the freshly drilled holes before we even hung the buckets! Thanks to the Tisch College Civic Engagement Fund for helping support sap collection and boil down activities.
  • Save the Date: The Boil Down Festival will be on March 5th from 10am to 2pm at the Somerville Community Growing Center.  Please find the poster attached - feel free to post it and help spread the word!
  • Join us on Facebook!  Attend the event and invite your friends
  • Have 7-9 year olds?  Check out the Library Workshops that are happening each Saturday in February at the Library.  Thanks to the Friends of the Somerville Public Library for their support of this event

GWS brings on a new Green Team Coordinator!

While we are sad that we have lost the amazing skills of Maura Schorr Beaufait as she travels across Guatemala, we are so excited to be working with Adam Machson-Carter. Adam will bring us into a great new era of the Green Team!

Jen

Adam Machson-Carter, Green Team Coordinator (adam@groundworksomerville.org)
Adam is the Green Team Coordinator at Groundwork Somerville.  He began at Groundwork in January of 2011.  Adam comes from a background in outdoor education, youth development, and environmental justice.   Adam believes in the power of young people to be catalysts for change in their environment and the world.  He has been a Massachusetts Promise Fellow at GED Plus as well as a youth worker and member leader at an environmental justice organization in Boston.  Adam is excited about carrying this work forward (and having fun!) with the Green Team at GWS!
