Camp Amnicon

Camp Amnicon strives to be a sanctuary to all people who set foot on its beautiful Lake Superior shoreline. Amnicon's ministry empowers today's youth by building community on small group adventure trips for at-risk youth groups. Campers are transformed by a week in the wilderness by learning that they are capable of overcoming challenges. Youth return home with the confidence and support to address the challenges in their home lives after team building in the wilderness at Camp Amnicon.

A Great Summer of Wilderness Experiences!

Dear Friends of Amnicon,

Camp can be a powerful and often life changing experience.  Many youth don’t even know what they have been missing until they come for the first time!  They comment on how confident they feel after paddling a whitewater river and how good it feels to be a part of a community – to belong someplace.  They are amazed at how much they can accomplish if they have a positive attitude and work together.  AND they do it all without being plugged in – they make their own music, play together and talk face to face about important things.

Through the generosity of our donors, we are lucky enough to serve a large percentage of youth who would not normally be able to come to camp because of our campership program.  Teenagers of all ethnicities, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds and life circumstances find a home at Camp Amnicon – a large percentage of youth that often would not make it at other camps - kids with behavioral or mental health issues.  This note from a social worker who attended camp with her group says it well:

“For the last several years, we at the Professional Association of Treatment Homes (PATH) have been fortunate enough to have a remarkable association with Camp Amnicon and its directors and staff.  Each year we have been offered scholarships provided by Camp Amnicon for many of our foster youth to attend a week of summer camp.  Although PATH makes a contribution towards camp expenses for these youth, it doesn’t come close to the amount required for Camp Amnicon to provide such a great week of fun.

Having been involved with Camp Amnicon for three years now, and having personally attended a week of camp with a group of foster youth, I wanted to write this letter to express gratitude for what this camp experience means to our youth.  During the week that I spent with Amnicon’s two guides and our 6 foster boys, I saw tremendous growth in all of the boys.  They were taught many survival and camping skills, but also life skills such as getting along with one another, working together as a team, learning appropriate communication skills, and finding empathy for each other.  They learned about the environment, nature, birds, fish and animals, canoeing skills, and the importance of caring for others, themselves, and our planet.  Some of our youth have returned over and over to Camp Amnicon, and some are striving to become an Amnicon youth leader one day.

I’d also like to mention the amazing directors, staff, and guides of Camp Amnicon.  How Camp Amnicon manages to find such wonderful, compassionate, patient, fun-loving guides is unbelievable!  Each guide has such an enormous capacity to create a safe, fun, learning environment while also demonstrating an incredible amount of patience for youth who can be extremely difficult at times.  Each year I am so impressed with the new guides who come in, and happy to see many of the same guides return each year.

Camp Amnicon has been a Godsend for many of our foster youth who would otherwise not have the ability to attend a camp during the summer. The adventures they’ve had at Camp Amnicon are so worth the effort it takes to get them up there, and the memories they make are priceless.

Thanks so much, Camp Amnicon!  You’re the BEST!”

Each Spring Camp Amnicon plays host to a great deal of change. With the budding of the trees comes a spirit of joy and excitement for all the wonderful times ahead. Volunteers come from all over the Midwest to help prepare the facility and equipment as the summer staff gather all of their energy to prepare for the coming months. There is something truly electrifying about a the spring time at Camp Amnnicon.

All of this excitment is thanks to the many people who have taken the time to make sure that every person who has come to Camp Amncion leaves with the knowledge that they are loved and valued. This is what Camp Amnicon is for, connecting youth and adults to creation, themselves and each other.

Because of your ongoing support, Amnicon continues to make new connections as well as supporting valued relationships with non-profits organizations, churches, and individuals. Many of members of the groups that come to Amnicon would not be able to afford their experience without the loving support and financial contributions of caring donors like you. New Years Reflections on the People of Camp Amnicon

Dear Friends of Amnicon,

Thank you so much for your ongoing prayers and support of the ministry of this camp and all who come to it, as campers, as staff, as visitors.

Camp Amnicon is people. So many individuals from incredibly diverse walks of life come together to connect with each other, creation, and deeper into themselves. Campers and retreat guests are cared for by wonderful staff. The staff is here due to the compassionate giving of all our donors. And it is all connected by the loving work of volunteers and our board members. The effort of hundreds of people contribute greatly to make each young person that experiences a summer trip feel that they truly are lovable and capable (many for the first time).

The New Year is proving to be full of joys and challenges. The summer calendar is filling up and we are on our way to meeting the goal of hosting over 40 wilderness trips this summer. More volunteers than ever have expressed a desire and a commitment to give of their time and talents. Excited college aged students are beginning the process of applying for positions as Guides and Support Staff, and generous people form across the world are coming together to show their financial support. The people of Amnicon, connecting in ways no one could have expected to provide life changing experiences for those most in need.

Because of your ongoing support, Amnicon continues to make new connections as well as supporting valued relationships with non-profits organizations, churches, and individuals. Many of members of the groups that come to Amnicon would not be able to afford their experience without the loving support and financial contributions of caring donors like you. Be assured your donation fosters profound differences in the lives of our individual campers as well as the larger communities where they will return.

Thank you again for your generous support!
