Programs

Sexual Violence in Schools. LvA formed partnerships to deal with six cases of sexual violence perpetrated by staff, most commonly teachers. These cases have involved a range of offenses including sexual assault, physical assault, forced abduction, forced administration of drugs, and rape. Victims have been both male and female and range from age 4 to adolescents. These cases have ranged geographically from Gauteng to the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Furthermore, LvA is working with partners in civil society and the government to improve the responses to this violence at a systemic level Police Abuse LvA initiated a range of interventions to ensure that police and court systems respond appropriately to allegations of GBV. In cases where police have refused to give HIV prevention to victims, refused to open a case, 'lost' case dockets, failed to follow up with cases, and even re-abused victims, LvA represents these victims to ensure that the proper procedures are followed. This includes dealing with cases of gang rape, abduction, child rape and domestic violence, and LvA interacts with all levels of the system to ensure that victims receive access to justice. Physical abuse at home and in the workplace LvA works on a range of cases to prevent abuse at home and in the workplace, securing protection orders and peace letters and facilitating the integrated services that are necessary, including counselling.
