Mission

Education Through Music-Los Angeles' mission is to provide music education in disadvantaged schools as part of the core curriculum and regular school day in order to enhance students' academic performance and general development. We believe every child deserves a well-rounded education, one that includes music and the arts. ETM-LA was founded in Fall 2006 as the first independent program in the nation based on the Education Through Music model that has been successfully serving New York City schools since 1991.

Programs

Education Through Music-Los Angeles forms long-term partnerships with disadvantaged elementary and middle schools that lack the resources for school-wide music programs. Our programs serve K-8 grades and we currently partner with 12 schools reaching over 5,500 children in the Burbank, Compton, LA, and Pasadena Unified School Districts. Music is taught both as a subject in its own right and as a means of supporting learning in other areas. We collaborate with principals and districts to develop partnerships that employs the following components to reinforce music's role as a core subject: 1) High quality yearlong weekly music instruction for every child that is a part of the core curriculum and is sequential, comprehensive, and standards-based, 2) Integration to support learning in a range of academic areas, 3) Professional development to improve instruction and understanding of arts education in the school community, 4) Evaluation and assessment, 5) Parent and community involvement, and 6) Long-term planning for sustaining instruction.
