HardtHaven Children's Home

The HardtHaven vision is nothing less than the transformation of AIDS orphans from hopeless, suffering victims into productive members of their community with an exciting vision for a greater Ghana. We believe that anyone anywhere can help to change these little lives, through the inexpensive care provided by this children's home. We offer more than just food, clothing, and shelter; we offer education, employment skills, and a loving home. Mission

Our ultimate aim is for the orphanage to be self-supporting as we begin implementing various alternative livelihood projects and receive renewable support from people around the globe. Combined with the skills and participation of international volunteers, HardtHaven offers unique opportunities for both volunteers and orphans to make a lasting, life changing difference in each other's lives.

Programs

HardtHaven Children's Home, our central project, is currently housing and caring for 21 children between the ages of 1 and 16. There are 7 girls and 14 boys, all AIDS orphans. An AIDS orphan is defined as a child who has lost one or both of their parents to AIDS. Six of our children are HIV positive. HardtHaven Children's Home first opened its doors on May 28th 2007. HardtHaven provides our children with a hygienic and safe living environment overseen by 6 full time staff/caregivers. All of our school aged children (17 out of 21 children) attend local schools, and are provided with routine medical care and check-ups. Our Sponsorship Program is currently sponsoring 30 families in the surrounding communities living with HIV/AIDS. Each family receives different support depending on his/her needs. We provide the families with: Educational support: HardtHaven pays school admission fees and other fees relating to school. We also provide school supplies for the children. We also provide supplemental income to families so they can allow their child to go to school instead of work. HardtHaven offers vocational training and provides continuing education for many of the young women that we sponsor. Health: HardtHaven arranges transport to special clinics for some of our sponsored families. We pay hospital bills and for the needed medications for all sponsored families. HardtHaven is working to enroll all of the sponsored families in the National Health Insurance program. Nutrition: For the children and families that need added nutritional support HardtHaven provides that as well; such as babies formula and high quality protein supplements. Job growth: We provide startup funds for the health of household to start a small business in a move for them to attain self-sufficiency. We provide short-term health rehabilitation to severely ill children referred to us by the medical staff at local hospital Margaret Marquart Hospital. We provide emergency medical funds for in-hospital care and on release take the children into the Home until their medical problem is resolved or improved enough to be returned to their families. The children are then cared for under our Sponsorship program. HardtHaven provides palliative care for several women in late stages AIDS living in Kpando. Depending on their needs food, personal care, or companionship are provided. Volunteers spend time with these women along with some the older children in the Home who volunteer to help. HardtHaven has partnered with our sister organization also based in Kpando, UNiTED, to help aid UNiTED in carrying out community health and hygiene education.
