Collecting School Supples for Childen

Cedar Village and our Chesed Corps are proud to be partnering with the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS) to send school supplies to an Ethiopian Jewish school in Haifa, Israel.  This project is part of an international global initiative called “AJAS Cares.”  We have committed to filling 20 of the backpacks – 18 in honor of our Chai Anniversary, one for the past and one for the future.

Our Chesed Corps will pack the backpacks once items have been donated.  The goal is to have our 20 backpacks filled with school supplies.  Please consider making a donation to purchase school supplies.

"I can't wait to fill the backpacks with supplies for the school children in Haifa," said one of the Chesed Corps volunteers.

Thanks for helping with this Chai Anniversary mitzvah.

Driving Assessments for Seniors

The Cedar Village Rehab Department offers a comprehensive Driving Assessment Program which provides objective information about a person’s ability to drive safely.  Whether someone is recovering from an illness or injury, has completed rehabilitation, or is just concerned about their driving skills, the driving assessment program focuses on helping people determine if they can continue to, or resume driving safely and ways to that they might improve their ability to function behind the wheel.

The first part is an off-road thorough clinical assessment of vision, physical functioning and cognition as it relates to safe driving.  The second part is an in-car assessment which evaluates safety behind the wheel.    The assessment is conducted by a specially trained Cedar Village occupational therapist.  Referrals can be made by physicians, family members, or by the individual driver.

We partner with a local driving school for the in-car assessment in a dually-equipped vehicle.

“I was thankful for the driving assessment team when I wasn’t sure if my parents should still be driving,” said a grateful daughter.

In honor of Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Every day 10,000 people turn 65 in the US alone, and that trend is going to continue for nearly the next 20 years. Demographics are shifting, and soon there will be more elder people in the US than ever before. At the same time that the population is growing, a startling number of elders face abusive conditions; most people aren't aware that an estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect or exploitation - that's 1 in 10, and that's only a part of the picture. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse reported, as many as 23 cases go unreported.

In honor of Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Monday, June 15, 2015, staff and residents of Cedar Village Retirement Community sported the color purple - whether in their clothes or with special purple awareness bracelets. Volunteers passed out bookmarks, bracelets and other elder abuse literature as well as some special purple treats.

Gail Davis, Director, External Sales and Admissions and Shalom Center Coordinator at Cedar Village, says "Elder abuse is an under-recognized problem with devastating and even life-threatening consequences.  At Cedar Village, we are proud of our Shalom Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, the only elder abuse shelter in Ohio and the sixth shelter created in the country.  Since the Shalom Center opened in January 2012, our mission has been to be available to help those victims who choose to seek shelter here as well as to continue to educate others".

Your donation will help provide needed items for victims of elder abuse who come to Cedar Village.
