Winning venture Making progress on the Ground

For the past 10 months Golan Yairi, the winner of our Hub Rally Accelerator, has been working hard. We are happy and excited to share with you the amazing progress he has made during this time.

Golan has behind him a 25 year career in the army - as the commander of the elite help and rescue unit (669) and later on as the founder and director of the Leadership School of the Israeli Airforce. He decided to leave all that and start his way as a social entrepreneur.

                                       / :

As someone who experienced an intensive career, Golan always felt torn between his job and his family - so now he is devoting his time and energy to helping families create meaningful mutual experiences, through which they are encouraged to change habits which might assist them in leading a deep, loving and supporting relationship and fit that into their routine.

Golan takes families to outdoor experiences where they get to know each other from new perspectives, work as a team to regain trust and communication, as well as enjoy and capture rare hours of being together with no distractions. He uses his vast experience in team building to glue family members together and remind them of the value and role of each one in the family structure. Lastly, Golan adds to the family dialogue and experience the aspect of shared values.

You are welcome to take a look at the website of Liba - meaning core/heart/center - this inspiring social enterprise taking its first steps in the world and already starting to make an impact in the lives of families in Israel, trying to cope with the intense and multiple demands modern life is challenging us all with.

First Product is on the Market

The Walker Bag
The Walker Bag

We are delighted to update you that Tamar Schmidek, one of the Hub Rally winner entrepreneurs, has just released her first socially-designed product to the market - a fashionable walker bag.

For Tamar, a young product designer, design is not an end to itself but rather a tool to create positive social change. Being very close to her grandmothers, she became more and more aware of the growing issue of elderly people being socially neglected. She decided to make her own modest contribution to improving their situation - by designing products that answer the practical needs of older people while, at the same time, being professionally designed, cool and fashionable.

Tamar does not work form within her own studio, she spent a lot of time meeting and interacting with her target audience in nursing homes, checking their needs, presenting intermediate solutions and getting feedback. Of course this interaction by itself has great social value.

The walker bag, which is Tamar's first product on the market, was designed after she noticed that most walkers have ugly and uncomfortable plastic bags attached to them as an improvised solution. She investigated the real needs of the people in the nursing homes and came up with this fresh, and very practical, design (see attached photos).

This is the first real product that goes out to the market with the full support of the Hub Rally staff. If you are interested in buying one, you are most welcome to contact Tamar at tamar_schmidek@yahoo.com, or fill this form (in Hebrew).

Getting Ready for the Next Hub Rally

Tomer Ben Ami
Tomer Ben Ami

After the successful wrap-up of our first Hub Rally, we are now working hard on launching the second one. The target date is early 2014, and we are aiming for an even richer, more intense program. This time we will focus on projects whose social impact has a potential for reaching a global scope, and as always we require all projects to have a business aspect which will ensure their long term sustainability.

At the moment we are in the process of recruiting more partners - you can become one of them by contributing to this campaign!

We also would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the winners of the first Hub Rally:

Golan Yairi - School for Families

Golan, a veteran high rank IDF Air Force commander, created a unique methodology that leverages his vast experience in leadership and team development for the purpose of strengthening relationships and communication inside families.

Tamar Schmidek - Social Design for Elderly People

Tamar, a young product designer, believes that elderly people have the right to be cool and fashionable just like anyone else. She uses methodologies of social design to develop new products which answer real needs of older people while being attractive and fashionable

Tomer Ben-Ami - Students as Sustainability Leaders

Tomer believes that the concept of sustainability is highly misunderstood in Israeli society, which normally interprets it only in the narrow context of recycling and a vague idea of 'Green'. He project deals with empowering students as change leaders in an effort to establish a much wider discussion on sustainability challenges in Israel.
