Summer 2014

This summer was quite busy for all at our Hogar Infantil Jesus Nazareno. First of all we had a group of five local teachers that provided activities for our children under the "Homeless" program of the Federal Government; we also sent our older kids to a local summer camp during the month of June.

In the area of fundraising, we held our annual "Bohemia" on april 26, to celebrate with our local individual donors. We also participated in the 2-14 USPS Food Drive where we received over thirty boxes filled with canned goods, some of which we shared with other local non-profits. We had a major activity sponsored by the radio station Majic 97.3, which resulted in various donations including TV set and video games for the children.

We were grateful to be the chosen entity by the Colegio de CPA de Puerto Rico and the Club Gallistico de Hatillo to be the recipient of their fundraising efforts.

Our major summer project was setting up a 45" trailer to be used for storage of records, obsolete equipment pending disposal and various items of clothing, toys and supplies. With the help of volunteers from the Calvary Baptist Church, 29 missionaries helped us clear out two classrooms which had been used as storage. These classrooms will now house the Social Workers and set up an area for therapies for our children. The volunteers spend three days cleaning, painting and moving items between the rooms and the new storage area.

We want to thank all the volunteers and contributors that helped make this summer activies a great success.

Holiday and first quarter

Volunteers from Escuela Dr. Carlos Gonzales
Volunteers from Escuela Dr. Carlos Gonzales

As usual, we had many visitors during the Holiday Season, bringing confort and many gifts to our children. We had visits from various Church groups as well as individual community organizatiuons such as: Clud de Oficinistas Mayaguezano, Asoc. de Carros Antiguos, Centro Rayitos de Luz, Lifetime, Herbalife, and InfoTech. We also had some Zumba instructors come in and had some fun times dancing with the kids and the "Facilitadoras" as well, even I jumped and danced a little bit.

We were chosen by the Medical Faculty of the Hospital Group of the "Hospital Buen Samaritano (Aguadilla) and San Carlos (Moca) to be the recipients of the proceeds of their annual Golf Tournament held at the Ramey Golf Course. We completed the cleanup and painting of our facilities and are currently working on the purchase of a trailed to be used for storage of excess materials and the complete revamping of the bathroom facilities for the children. We want to fix the bathrooms to make them more kid friendly and as safe as possible.

The time now is to prepare proposals for Justice Department funding and Legislative funds. We are working on these proposals which allow us to pay for the childrens caretakers.

Fall Cleanup !

Safehouse Movement Team
Safehouse Movement Team

We've had a busy fall and pre-Christmas activities to ready our Home for the Holiday season. Various groups of volunteers visited Hogar Infantil Jesus Nazareno to help us clean up and maintain our facilities. One group came on a saturday to clean up, and dispose of all unused and discarded assets that had been accumulating at the back of the house and around the grounds. Two groups participated in painting the two story building inside and out. Our volunteers included Unit 141 from the National Guard, a group from HANES brands, Inc. and a volunteer crew from HerbalLife. I am especially proud of my son Eddie, who came with some friends representing SAFEHOUSE MOVEMENT, used their vacation time in  PR and spent two days building a security fence for the children. We continue to foster participation from the community using resources from the Interamerican University's Social Worker's Association. Our next big project will be the remodeling and upgrade of the bathrooms in the home to make them more kid friendly and safer, thanks to a grant obtained from Fundacion Angel Ramos.

Please check out the pictures of various groups of volunteers. We cannot use photos of the children in our care because they are under the care of Social Services.
