Take2 Middle School Development Underway!

Staff developing the middle school curriculum
Staff developing the middle school curriculum

Dear Take2 Supporter,

We’re expanding!  Through frost-covered windows, the Take2 team has been hard at work planning the curriculum (and dreaming of summer) for our Take2 Middle School camp.  Nothing could be more energizing than creating new content with talented educators who share a passion for social learning!

Take2 Middle School camp takes concepts from the original Take2 camp and challenges campers to apply them in more generalized settings through the planning and execution of several excursions.  While taking part in these excursions, teams of campers will work together to target goals relevant to the weekly theme, and have fun meeting and making new friends.  Our weekly themes include:

  • Listening – What is expected of me as a listener?  What does it mean to be an effective listener?
  • Communicating – It’s more than just words.
  • Code-Switching – Knowing the difference between “regulated” and “unregulated” social systems and how to adjust my behavior for each.
  • Flexibility – Bringing it all together using concepts of flexibility; knowing how to compromise and go with the flow.

Up to eight campers will join us for our middle school pilot this summer.  Your contribution provides Take2 with the necessary funds needed for this exciting expansion.

  • $20 – will pay for Metro passes for three campers
  • $100 – will purchase one FlipCam to enhance social learning through video self-modeling (VSM)
  • $1000 – will allow one financially needy child to attend camp this summer

To follow the progress of the Take2 Middle School development, or for more information about Take2, check us out at www.take2camp.org. As always, thank you for your generous contributions and support.

Warmly,

Callie Stezar & Lynn Cannon

Take2 Social Skills Groups & Middle School Program

Dear Take2 Supporter,

The Take2 Camp post-season has been incredibly busy!  This fall, we launched our second 15-week social skills program, which uses the Unstuck and On Target! curriculum to teach flexibility and social skills in an engaging environment.

Students taking part in Unstuck find a peer group with whom they can spend structured time experiencing success.  For many, this group has helped to cultivate a strong camaraderie with peers and positive relationships with educators that can’t be found elsewhere.  As one student put it, “The teachers are really nice and they make you feel happy and sort of like at home. Very, very comfortable.”

Parents of this program have reported, “This is the only place I feel truly comfortable leaving my child—I know that he won’t be misunderstood here.”  While their kids are learning, parents are taking part in a parent education workshop that helps them learn how to shape their support in a way that fosters independence and perseverance.

The Unstuck program has nearly doubled since its pilot in the Spring of 2013.  It has given us the opportunity to widen our reach to both child and parent members of the community, and for that, we are very grateful.

Over the next few weeks, Take2 Camp will begin the application process for it’s 11th summer.  This is a particularly busy and exciting time, because we are also in the process of developing a middle school version of Take2 that will be ready to launch in the summer of 2014!  Please check our website as we post more information about this new, excursion-based program.

Although the weather is determined to make us feel otherwise, summer will be upon us before we know it, and we ask that you consider Take2 Camp during this giving season.

Your support has been and continues to be an essential component of our success.

Gratefully,

Callie Stezar and Lynn Cannon

Another Fantastic Summer at Take2!

Dear Friends of Take 2,

We just wrapped up our 10th summer at Take2. The campers and staff have much to be proud of: they worked hard, learned a lot and, most importantly, had a lot of fun along the way. Each camper celebrated so many successes, whether it was….

  • finding that there really is someone who loves Yu-gi-oh as much as I do and while we might disagree about which card is the best, we can still be friends
  • uncovering my strengths and challeges helps me figure out when I need to ask for help and when I can help others
  • realizing that if I lose a game of Connect 4 gracefully there will be opportunities for games in the future because people will want to play with me again
  • investigating what others are trying to communicate through their words, body langague and tone of voice
  • discovering that when I cheer for others, they are more likely to cheer for me and that feels great
  • overcoming a fear of heights, taking a plunge and riding the zip-line at Calleva camp…or
  • figuring out that there is always a Plan B…..

 This summer’s curriculum focused on:

-          Week 1: “Thinking about Me” Labeling my own emotional experience and what strategies I can use to regulate myself when my feelings start to get out of control.

-          Week 2: “Thinking about You”- How do I use the your “clues”… body language, tone of voice and facial expression to figure out what you are thinking and feeling?

-          Week 3: “Thinking about Us”- How do my thoughts differ from yours? How does my behavior impact the thoughts you are having and how can we create good thoughts in one another so that you want to be with me and I want to be with you?

-          Week 4: “Bringing it all Together”- The strategies and skills the campers acquired over the 3 weeks were put into action as we took several field trips and made gifts for one another.

The fun does not cease with the end of summer- social learning groups will continue throughout the year as kids continue to explore the secrets of friendship, tips for how to be flexible and how to set plans to accomplish their goals.

Check our website often to find camp updates, social learning groups and summer 2014 registration.

As always, we are so grateful for your support.

Fondly,

Lynn
