Programs

After-School Instruction: Students of all ages attend weekly private, group, and ensemble lessons at Opus 118's location. Instruction is currently offered for violin, viola, cello, guitar, and piano. Monthly recitals and community performances showcase students' hard work by opening Opus 118's doors to students' families, friends, and the general public. In-School Program: Students in local elementary schools are offered the opportunity to study violin and cello during regular school hours. Opus 118 not only provides instructors for this program, but also provides each student an instrument, bow, case, and any necessary music, ensuring student engagement without regard to means. Chamber Music Program: In partnership with local chamber music ensembles, students at Opus 118 have the opportunity to rehearse and perform chamber works alongside professional musicians. Music Within Program: Music Within, a curriculum for children ages 2 to 6 and their families, was developed for Opus 118 by Sara Zur, Ph.D. This program explores basic music instruction through interactive, improvisational movement and vocal play. Teaching Seminars: String teachers who work nationally, internationally, and locally come to the Opus site for a weekend of intensive training in the Guaspari method of group instruction. Community Programs Initiative: Each year, Opus 118 brings the Music Within curriculum to hundreds of preschoolers, tuition free, at Head Start and other neighborhood programs. Partnerships with area hospitals also bring performances by Opus 118 students to patients.
