Ruchika Social Service Organisation

The mission is to help the children deprived of normal conditions of life and create a society free from child labor, exploitation and abandonment. As the development of these children is worthwhile when they become active participants and positive contributors to their communities, it is aimed to provide joyful and innovative education, health care, supplementary nutrition, recreation, counseling, vocational training, rehabilitation and repatriation services to these children.

RSSO believes that the most basic education instills a sense of confidence, purpose, and insight that is necessary for successful and productive participation in any society. Without at least functional literacy, children and adults lack the ability to adequately support themselves in a legitimate profession or trade and thus often fall prey to all forms of exploitation, corruption, and abuse.  Education it firmly believes is the one and only catalyst to improve the status of children, to give them a chance to improve their livelihood in the future and advance them an opportunity to upward social mobility. Therefore, RSSO seeks to ensure that a quality school education is imparted to all children within our target group of street and slum children.

 

  1. 1.    Activities and Achievements

During the intervention period we basically worked with four groups – Children, community, schools teachers and education department.

Children

An assessment was conducted by Indus Learning Solutions Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi on the students learning in our remedial centres. It has taken a sample of about 350 children as Experimental Group and around 100 children as Control Group (the children not covered under the remedial education program). The base line as well as end line assessment was conducted by that organization. Following is the result of End line assessment

a)    Overall learning levels of grade 3 EG (Experimental Group) students in the End Line improved by 24% and 28% in Math and English   respectively.

 

b)   Overall learning levels of grade 5 EG (Experimental Group) students in the End line improved by 28% and 32% in Math and English   respectively.

c)     Overall learning levels of grade 7 EG (Experimental Group) students in the End Line improved by 12% and 35% in Math and English   respectively. 

Community

Due to our continuous community intervention following achievements have been made.

  • Basti Education Committees have been formed in all the targeted slums.
    • 72 % of children have been enrolled in the government schools as per the survey report 2012.  (3294 out of 4567 in 40 slums) However enrolment drive is still going on.

 

  •  Sex ratio in school government schools- More girls have enrolled than boys – 1633 Boys & 1661 Girls in 40 slums.

 

  •  Drop out has been noticeably checked this year. This year only 282 Boys & 211 Girls have dropped out from the schools which is only 13 % in comparison to 40 last year. 

 

  •  19 out of 59 Differently abled children going to school of which 17 come to remedial centres.

 

 1044 out of 2446 children (0-5yrs.) are in also in preschool centres.   

Schools

As per the survey report (40 slums)

  • Enrolment has increased  and Drop out reduced by 27 %. Only 493 or 13 %  during   2011-12. Normally it is about 40 %.
  • School Management Committees  has been formed in all the targeted  schools.
  • Average attendance in the school has increased. At present it is 72 %
  • RSSO teachers are allowed to help school teachers in the schools.
  • School teachers were learning innovative  methods from the RSSO teachers.
  •  Children admitted in age appropriate classes.
  •  Transfer certificate / birth certificates were not compulsory for admission of children.
  •  Over 50 children from slum have been admitted in private schools through free  

 scholarship scheme.

  •  19 differently abled children were in the government schools.

Achievement in Other Areas

  1. Ms. Usha Padhi, IAS, Commissioner Cum Secretary, Deptt. Of School and Mass Education, Govt. of Odisha and Sri Narayan Chandra Jena, Director, Madhyamika Sikhya Parishad, Govt. of Odisha graced the occasion as Chief Guest in Science Exhibition demonstrated by the little scientists from the slums of Bhubaneswar.
  2. People from all segments participated in a painting competition with children.
  3. UCO Bank has donated school bags to the children
  4. Peace Builder, USA has supplied a shipment of clothes for the children
  5. Inclusive park for differently abled children is created in the slum & managed by slum Mahila Mandol
  6. Messages on hand washing are sent to the family – community through Hand wash campaigns
  1. 2.    Outcome and Impact of the project

a)    Upward education development of slum children.

The Indus result shows an upward academic development of slum children. This needs to retained in future. The methodologies needs to be replicated into scale.

b)    Conducive slum environment

To some extend the slums are cooperative to send the children in to the schools. However we have a stipulated number of children out of school who needs to be enrolled in the school system.

c)    Sensitive teachers

The teachers are now became trained to achieve academic proficiency of the children. However then need to acquire knowledge to mobilize the community to achieve RTE. In addition then need to learn some counseling strategy to motivate the drop out and out of school students.

d)    Establishment of CPS deptt.

It is a big achievement to establish a CP S Deptt. In the organization. The department is helping all education program of the organization. The Unit is also growing and now the organization has started documentation of the education success stories and preparing methodologies of the teaching. This also has been able to sought out the academic issues of the children and teachers to some extent.

In addition,

e)    The enrollment of students has increased by 30 %

f)     The dropout rate has reduced by 278 %

g)    School Management Committees have been formed in all schools

h)    The Private schools have started taking admission of underprivillaged children as per the provision of RTE.

i)      Now the government schools are admitting the children at any age and even without any certificate as education is the fundamental right of every child.

Different funding agencies have started putting their interest to support the endeavor of Ruchika by supporting the Remedial education project. As a new agency, Tech- Mahindra Foundation has started its support to the endeavor from October 2012.

In India, as per the Right to Education Act 2009 all children in the age group of 6 to 14 years need to be in the schools. But the history witnesses that, the Government education programs are hardly successful for slum populations. RSSO expects universal enrolment and retention of slum children through community empowerment, children counseling, school teacher’s sensitization program and imparting remedial education to maintain academic proficiency of the children at par with their counterpart.

Ruchika Social Service Organisation involves setting up Remedial Education centres within the communities with a typical ratio of one school for every 200-300 families.  Each school was running in a one-room school shed, has 20-25 children spanning grade levels 1-5 and about 20 children of grade 6 to 8 with an age distribution from  6-14 years. The teachers have been following curriculum at-par to formal Government schools. A total number of 3500 (100 Primary and 62 Elementary) slum children are studying in our education centres.

The base line evaluation was conducted by Indus Learning Solutions, New Delhi in view of Blooms Taxonomy in August 2012. A sample of 493 children from the Ruchika intervention area and 332 children from Ruchika’s non intervention area appeared the test. The test result found that the children provided with remedial support is excellent comparing the non intervention area. The children with support from Ruchika gets average of 60% where the children from non intervention area gets average of 40%, attached please find the test result.

In addition competency tests have been completed in all remedial centres to assess the proficiency of the children. The impact of it shows widespread in most of the slums.

We are experimenting a new strategy of education viz. reward / special incentive to the best teachers who build most significant changes in the academic achievements of the children. The teachers of the remedial education centres where it is found most of the children securing more than 80% mark in the Base Line test awarded with the special Incentive. It is found that it promotes the teaching spirit of the teachers and best academic career of the children. Also this enables the children to learn at faster rate with most supportive hand of the teachers. This is on experiment basis and we expect its impact in the next tests. Based on next test result we will replicate the strategy in all fields.

At present 150 Remedial education centres are run by the Ruchika Social Service Organisation involves setting up Remedial Education centres within the communities with a typical ratio of one school for every 200-300 families.  Each school was running in a one-room school shed, has 20-25 children spanning grade levels 1-5 and about 20 children of grade 6 to 8 with an age distribution from  6-14 years. The teachers have been following curriculum at-par to formal Government schools. A total number of 3200 (90 Primary and 60 Elementary) slum children are studying in our education centres.

All necessary steps were taken to mainstream all children into Government schools. As a result all of our children have joined the regular schools. The teacher conducted parent counseling and community meetings. To ensure maximum attendance of the children in the school the teachers were regularly meeting the school teachers and working with school management committees.

The end line evaluation was conducted by Indus Learning Solutions, New Delhi in view of Blooms Taxonomy. A sample of 387 children appeared the test. The test result is excellent, attached please find the test result. In addition competency tests have been completed in all remedial centres to assess the proficiency of the children. In addition, teachers’ training was conducted to build up the capacity of the remedial teachers to address the exact problem of the students.

The impact of the project is widespread. In  Maître Vihar Government Project School, the District Inspector of Schools has accepted one of our teachers to work in the school and teach our innovative methods to the government school teachers. This has been done on an experimental basis. The children who are studying in the remedial education centres are doing very well in both academic and cocurricular field as per the report of the school teachers. This year drop out has reduced to only 5 % because of our intensive intervention in the targeted slums.

We are experimenting a new strategy of education viz. Friendship Education. This enables the children to learn at faster rate without any fear factor. This has been accepted by the children and has proved its impact in the field. We are planning to replicate the strategy in all fields.

We sincerely express our heartfelt gratitude to our supporters for their magnanimous gesture towards the children living in oppressed and deprived of their minimum basic right to go to school.

We all understand that the children are our future and it is our duty to address their needs. Here is the question of 3000 slum and working children who tear down their childhood gloomy family condition and are often ignored and disregarded by the government programs. Let us join hands to make their dream sweeter with remedial education. We have miles to go ahead together.
