Mission

The mission of Instituto para el Desarrollo Humano (IDH) is to improve the quality of life of communities in poverty-stricken areas across Bolivia through projects and programmes based on research, a strong commitment to education, and a participative approach in the fields of social medicine, the environment, and human rights. Since our founding in 1997, we have been committed to a holistic approach in development and over 15 years of service to the local community has allowed us to develop and create innovative ways to engage and educate diverse groups of people about HIV, AIDS and sexuality as well as providing healthcare and counselling to those living with HIV/AIDS. Our vision for the future is that people, society, and the state sustainably integrate disease prevention, respect for human rights and environmental protection in the wider perspective of human development in Bolivia.

Programs

IDH has three main programs: SidAccion, MediAccion and EcoAccion, all focusing on different areas of development. SidAccion is currently the largest programme area with a strong reproductive health and HIV/AIDS focus that incorporates several different projects. Through the 'Prevention' sub-programme, IDH provides educational sessions for young people, teachers, parents, members of the military, and other key groups with the aim of reducing behaviour that puts their sexual health and well-being at risk and contributing to the prevention of HIV in the Cochabamba community. We organize an annual two-week expo - called ExpoSida - where young people can eearn about a range of topics related to health and HIV/AIDS prevention in an interactive, youth-friendly environment. Within this sub-programme IDH also works with several schools in La Paz and Cochabamba as part of our 'Abriendo Puertas' project that provides a way for teachers and students to engage meaningfully with the topic of sexuality and reproductive health at local schools. Our 'Human Rights' sub-programme seeks to ensure that the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS are respected through providing information and counselling, and empowering those affected by HIV. There are currently two projects that we conduct in this area, one focusing on knowing and exercising one's rights and the other one empowering people living with HIV/AIDS in order to secure access to better healthcare. Our 'Comprehensive Health' sub-programme aims to improve the quality of healthcare that people living with HIV/AIDS in Cochabamba receive through providing medical attention and psychological counselling and through providing training on HIV/AIDS to healthcare workers and medical students in the region. After 2010, we felt that the introduction of two new projects would greatly complement our existing work and as a result, we are currently in the process of rolling out two new projects, one for the Mediaccion programme that focuses on the prevention of violence within the family and in early relationships, and one project for our EcoAccion programme that seeks to educate the local community, and young people in particular, about climate change and environmental damage and its prevention.
