You've Helped Mary Lift Her Family Out of Poverty

Mary is proud to be a CKW helping farmers
Mary is proud to be a CKW helping farmers

Thank you so much for your support! We are very thankful for the kindness and generosity you show. With your help, Grameen Foundation is continuing to improve the lives of farmers in Uganda with our Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) Project.

Your donations to Grameen Foundation have helped people like Mary and her family of five who live in rural northern Uganda. Despite struggling at times, Mary has always been an honorable and respected member of her community. In 2008, she was nominated by her peers to become a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) for Grameen Foundation.

Since then, Mary has been trained and equipped with a special smartphone containing a searchable database with agricultural, seasonal, and livestock information. Now Mary visits 6-7 farmers a week to answer their questions about when to plant, how to get the best price for their crop and when to harvest. With the income she makes as a CKW, she has been able to bring her family above the poverty line, as well as help combat poverty in Uganda.

Mary has also seen a change in the roles of female farmers in Uganda, and has been proud to watch her role result in more respects for the women in households. With women playing a bigger role in decision-making, and the information Mary provides, families are able to send their children to school, put food on the table, and save farms from disappearing.

Thanks to your generosity, we have accomplished the following:

  • Our CKWs have had more than 2 million interactions with farmers!
  • Nearly 1,300 CKWs are currently helping farmers by providing tips on how best to care for their crops and livestock – which they depend on for both their food and their income.
  • We’ve now reached 254,000 total farmers helped.
  • Our CKW program has reached a total of 21,800 villages!

Thank you for helping Grameen Foundation truly make a difference where it matters most, engaging respected community members to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. We couldn’t do our work without you!

Thank you so much for your support! We are very thankful for the kindness and generosity you show. With your help, Grameen Foundation is reaching out and improving the lives of farmers in Uganda with our Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) Project.

Thanks to your generosity, we have accomplished the following:

  • Our CKWs have had more than 1.9 million interactions with farmers!
  • More than 1,300 CKWs are currently helping farmers by providingtips on how best to care for their crops and livestock – which they depend on for both their food and their income. We’ve now reached 249,000 total farmers helped.
  • Our CKW program has reached a total of 21,000 villages, 5,000 more villages reached than this time last year.

Your donations to Grameen Foundation have helped people like John, a farmer and CKW in Uganda. John, a father of five, was selected as a leader from within his community to serve as a CKW. Using the mobile technology and training provided by Grameen Foundation, John was able to completely transform his crops and become an expert farmer trained to provide helpful farming advice for his village. John learned better spacing techniques and also how to use the right kind of fertilizer for his crops. With these changes and more, John was able to earn TEN TIMES more from his farm! Because of hard work and donors like you, John, his family, and his farmer neighbors are on their way to a brighter future.

Once again, THANK YOU! Because of the changes you help to make possible, farmers such as John have to opportunity to reach their potential and to create productive livelihoods for themselves and their families.

Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) Progress Report

Angel, a cacao farmer in Colombia
Angel, a cacao farmer in Colombia

We’re so thankful for all the support that helped us achieve our previous fundraising goal for our Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) project. We’re excited to announce that we’ve increased our goal to in order to reach even more farmers!

With our CKW project, farmers are getting the information they need to improve their livelihoods and provide for their families. Our CKWs and the farmers they serve are sharing the information they learn with others – instilling lasting knowledge and positive change across entire villages.

So far, we have achieved the following thanks to your generosity:

  • Our CKWs have had more than 1.88 million interactions with farmers!
  • More than 1,200 CKWs are currently helping farmers by providing tips on how best to care for their crops and livestock – which they depend on for both their food and their income. We’ve now reached 212,000 total farmers helped.
  • Our CKW program has reached a total of 20,000 villages, 5,000 more villages reached than this time last year.

The information that CKWs learn and impart is essential to the success of local farmers. Angel, a cacao farmer in Colombia, used to struggle with pests, flooding, and other dangers to his crop. Then, he connected with a Grameen Foundation CKW who used a mobile phone to search for information about crop management, market prices, and fair trade certification. Angel consulted regularly with his CKW and learned to grow better crops. Now, Angel is a member of the Asocati agricultural cooperative and is on track to becoming certified by Fairtrade International! He has also started selling chickens and eggs to make more money.

Thank you once again for your compassion and generosity. You are helping poor farmers get the information they need to manage their crops and lift themselves out of poverty. Won’t you consider making another donation today so that we can help even more farmers?
