Reading Village empowers youth to eradicate illiteracy and lead their communities out of poverty.
In communities where only one in ten children reaches high school, Reading Village's Leaders & Readers program provides scholarships so that indigenous teenagers can complete secondary school and compete for higher paying jobs. In return for this financial support, the scholars participate in rigorous leadership training and practice these skills by leading literacy programs for younger children. In this way, one generation of leaders is creating another generation of readers. Where 50% of adults are illiterate, Reading Village scholars are graduating from high school, finding jobs, pursuing university, and mentoring young kids. Not only is our Leaders and Readers program interrupting a cycle of generational poverty but it's the catalyst for a new cycle of leadership, literacy, and prosperity.
