Mission

Partner for Surgery was founded in 2001 to serve as a bridge between patients in need of surgical care in remote communities and the international volunteer triage and surgical teams that come to Guatemala to help the impoverished; and to educate and empower rural Guatemalans to initiate and advocate for vital health care services on their own behalf.

Programs

Mobile Medical Mission: Six times a year, we organize one-week missions to Guatemala's rural areas. 2 to 4 volunteer medical professionals (doctors and nurses) from North America evaluate approximately 1000 individuals and identify over 150 surgical candidates. Cervical Cancer Screening Program: the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Guatemala is cervical cancer. Partner for Surgery provides screening and treatment for precancerous conditions, and trains Ministry of Health nurses in both procedures. Targeted Infant Nutrition Program: serves infants born with cleft lips and palates who cannot breastfeed, and whose parents cannot afford formula. Without the intervention of TINP, these children are likely to die of starvation. While the initial goal of the program is simply to keep the infant alive, ultimately, the goal is to help the infant gain weight and be strong enough to undergo cleft lip/palate surgery. Surgical Missons: Nearly every week of the year, surgical missions are organized by different international volunteer surgical teams at different surgical sites in Guatemala.Partner for Surgery brings in patients for these teams, particularly for those teams who reach out to the neediest of the poor. We provide all necessary patient logistics (transportation, food, temporary housing). Our local Health Promoters confirm the patients, escort the patients to and from the hospital, provide personal attention, translate, serve as patient advocates and, if necessary, assist with the follow up.
