Mission

The mission of Better Family Foundation (BFF) is to provide free education, training, counseling, and financial aid to all families in need so that they may gain access to the necessary tools needed to improve their lives. Better Family Foundation aims to empower families both socially and economically. In order to see this come to fruition we have integrated components of capacity building into much of our work. We do this because we understand that empowerment begins with building the capacity of our community. Capacity building not only assures that families will make more healthful educated life choices but it also allows families to understand that they have the power to guide their own destinies. While Better Family Foundation works with many types of families in many different communities we feel our efforts can be most productive when working with marginalized communities. Marginalized communities in the Fundong area consist of orphans, widows, ethnic minorities as well as those who are economically vulnerable. It is within these communities that Better Family Foundation does most of our work.

Programs

In order to help further empower families socially and economically Better Family Foundation has taken a multi-faceted approach toward development. Our comprehensive programming operates within the framework of these three domains: education, infrastructure and direct financial support. It is under each domain/program area Better Family Foundation conducts its projects. Education: Better Family Foundation recognizes education as an invaluable means of furthering our mission. While every project we carry out does contain an educational component, we have dedicated an entire aspect of Better Family Foundation solely to develop educational opportunities for those communities we serve. Our educational component is materialized through seminars and workshops that we host free of cost. All of our educational efforts are geared towards the pertinent and changing needs of our community. Our educational endeavors can be further classified into two arenas-health and advocacy. Our health education seminars involve empowering and encouraging families to make healthful choices. We have covered, and continue to reiterate, many topics including: appropriate nutrition, family planning, sexual transmitted infections, how to properly treat drinking water, etc. Our advocacy education involves working with the community in order to change paradigms regarding marginalized issues and populations. Under this sub-arena of education we hold workshops regarding the plight of widows, orphans and other vulnerable children, issues of gender and human rights, the importance of educating young girls, as well as conflict resolution within the family and/or marriage in the form of counseling. Infrastructure: Better Family Foundation bears witness to the major disparities in tangible infrastructure that exists between communities. These disparities are directly responsible for many adverse health effects which greatly impact the lives of those who are forced to endure these inequalities. In order to further compliment our educational aspect and further support families living in our society's margins Better Family Foundation works to improve a community's physical infrastructure. Better Family Foundation promotes all sustainable technologies and infrastructure which help improve a community's standard of living, quality of life and health. As of recently, Better Family Foundation has partnered with a donor organization, Shared World Visions, USA in order to further realize this goal. With the financial support of Shared World Visions we are able to install village water supply systems for those villages most at need for potable water. To ensure sustainability Better Family Foundation conducts a three week training program for community members. This training covers all aspects of the village water system-from maintenance and up-keep, to conflict resolution, to budgeting and to the coordination, training and election of a water management committee. At this time we are also exploring other partnership opportunities in order to obtain funding for other vital infrastructure improvements that will yield in more healthy and productive lives. Direct Financial Support: There is tremendous need for financial support here in our work area. An overwhelming majority of families will survivor on merely 1 USD per day. In order to help alleviate this stressor we have begun a pilot child sponsorship program. This provides direct financial support to help keep children living in the margins in school by directly paying for their school books, fees and uniforms. This enables children to receive an education and allows the family to utilize that money for other vital uses.-such as food, water and/or electricity costs.
