Mission

Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation was established in 1981 by a group of individuals committed to improving the lives of burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement. Sunshine Foundation has for mission to provide an extensive range of services for burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement in order to assist them in their physical, psychological and social rehabilitation, as well as uphold their human rights and dignity.

Programs

Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1981 with the mission to assist burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement in their physical, psychological and social rehabilitation; and to uphold their human rights and dignity. We achieve this by providing services to children, youths, adults with facial disfigurement and their families, as well as by carrying out advocacy and prevention campaigns to raise public awareness and change attitudes towards facial disfigurement. Sunshine provides services and support to 2,000 burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement annually. Our clients include burn survivors, oral cancer survivors, people with hemangioma and people with neurofibromatosis. With over100 employees across Taiwan, we rely on a multi-disciplinary team composed of social workers, occupational and physical therapists, psychological counselors, vocational counselors and social educators. Sunshine has built a service network that now includes five centers across Taiwan (Taipei-North, Taichung-Central, Chiayi-South, Kaohsiung-South, Hualian-East), to provide services adapted to regional realities. Other facilities located in Taipei include a center for the physical rehabilitation of burn survivors and oral cancer survivors, as well as a halfway house providing accommodation for burn survivors during their rehabilitation period in Taipei. Services of the foundation focus on the physical, psychological and social aspects of disfigurement, the goal being to help clients regain their physical functions, build their self-confidence, strengthen their self-esteem and empower them so that they can live independent lives and participate fully in society. Services include: - Financial aid that covers the expenses for medical treatment, rehabilitation, pressure garments, living and transportation during rehabilitation. Special subsidies are available to oral cancer survivors for the purchase of nutritional supplements. - Physical rehabilitation services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, pressure therapy and the production of assistive equipment. The Foundation operates in Taipei the Sunshine Rehabilitation Center, the first community-based rehabilitation center in Taiwan exclusively dedicated to burn rehabilitation. In the regions, therapists of Sunshine use an outreach model, carrying home rehabilitation visits. - Housing services offering temporary or short-term accommodation for clients in need of continuous rehabilitation. - Psychological counseling services such as one-on-one individual counseling, group counseling, play therapy and sand therapy. Social workers and therapists organize a wide range of activities to encourage social participation and foster peer support, such as youth camps, outings, trainings, etc. - Scholarships to encourage children and youths with burns or facial disfigurement to pursue their studies. - Social education for the prevention of burns and oral cancer, as well as for enhancing social acceptance of burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement. Social educators visit schools, communities and workplace across Taiwan to carry out education work. The Foundation also relies on the media and Internet to promote its prevention and social acceptance message. - School counseling services to help children with burns or facial disfigurement return to school. The Foundation works with the child, parents and teachers to prepare him or her for life in the classroom, and also organizes (upon the request of the child and parents or school) activities in the school to raise awareness of classmates towards burn prevention and acceptance towards people with facial disfigurement. - Vocational services to facilitate the reintegration of our beneficiaries in the job market and allow them to live full, independent lives. Vocational counselors help clients prepare for return to work and support them in the process of adapting to a new job. The Foundation also operates carwash centers that serve as training platforms to enhance work skills of clients, while at the same time change public perception of facial disfigurement. The Foundation also initiated in 2011 an international cooperation program with the goal of sharing through training and capacity building activities our burn rehabilitation knowledge and techniques with partners in developing countries. By transferring our knowledge and techniques, we hope to allow local burns professionals to be better able to provide quality care and services to their burn survivors. A first project focusing on pressure garment production techniques was launched in Nicaragua, and future cooperation is scheduled in India.
