Programs

Education Program We believe that lack of education is a form of disability for life, and therefore working with children and schools in our villages has been an immediate priority. We work with schools, both pre-primary and primary schools to ensure enrollment, decrease drop outs, supporting curriculum development, providing materials and resources and overall to bring about changes in attitudes, improve the environment and better quality of education. The focus of our education program first and foremost is to ensure that all children in our villages are in school and that here are no drop outs. Awareness program on Education We routinely conduct awareness programs to inform the community of the key messages on education. Through this program we motivate the community to make sure that all children, including girl children, went to school and that lack of education is a form of disability for life. We also urge the communities to use the schools in their own villages rather than going outside. Pre- School Program Kalanjiyam also works with pre-school children from adopted villages, providing nutritional and educational inputs daily as an after school activity to children. Kalanjiyam is working with 110 preschool children from six villages: Strengthening local Panchayat Schools by adopting them Over the last three years, Kalanjiyam has been working with Panchayat Union Schools in our villages with the view to strengthen the quality of education and ultimately increase the proportion of students who successfully complete their schooling till higher secondary. Kalanjiyam has adopted a number of local village Panchayat Schools to further strengthen the existing programs and quality of education. Kalanjiyam has been working in coordination with community, school and local officials and taken up the following activities: Improving the environment by providing tables, benches and mats for seating in class rooms Providing electrical wiring where required, fans and lighting for class rooms Providing note books, uniforms, school bags for school children Supporting school fees of children from poor families Equipping schools with computers and providing computer education for all classes with tables and chairs and appointing a computer teacher Providing education materials and teaching aides and charts Equipping all adopted schools with comprehensive sports and encouraging physical education for children Kalanjiyam has appointed teacher for extra curricular programs during school for all the children, including: Music, Drawing and Yoga Providing supplemental nutrition for children: weekly fruits, nutritious mixture and vegetables to noon meal Conduct health and dental camps for students annually Improve local health sub centers for children to access for basic medical care / first aid Provide first aid kits to all adopted schools Provided slipper stand and school bells School ID cards with photo for all students in adopted schools, with their blood group Built toilets in schools with no toilet and renovating toilets where toilets are not in usable condition Ensuring sanitation in village school toilets by appointing persons to clean and maintain them Provide school van facility for children from nine villages to travel to nearest school Health cards to children in 4 schools (for about 300 children) for them to get medical care for illness from a health care practitioner in local town, free of cost Audio equipment to conduct school programs Computer Classes: Many high school level children in our villages do not have the exposure to computer education. To address this issue, we conduct computer classes on basics of computers at Kalanjiyam Training Center. Community Lending Library: Kalanjiyam has taken special efforts to encourage the students in our adopted villages to develop their reading habit. We have a community lending library program with more than 100 children from our villages enrolled in this. Kalanjiyam field staff travel from village to village giving and exchanging books to these registered children. Kalanjiyam Scholarship program Encouraging students from our villages to score high marks is an important aspect of Kalanjiyam's work in area of education. In rural areas securing 80% in exams is a big deal. The schools in our villages are focused on getting the students to achieve these scores and Kalanjiyam is also making all efforts to support the schools and students in this regard. Kalanjiyam provides prizes and/ or scholarships to all students getting more than 400 marks 10th standard exam, which would be above 80%. Education support for needy children There are many families with economic need and have difficulty paying for their children's education. Kalanjiyam supports families and children in our villages to ensure that they complete their schooling. Many needy children in our adopted school are supported by providing school uniforms, note books and other accessories. Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials focusing on Health An important part of our work is also to bring about greater awareness on issues related to improving education or health of communities and therefore we take up efforts in the areas of information education and communication. We have developed such video documentary / print materials on a number of issues including: Maternal / pre-natal / ante-natal health, early childhood development, reproductive health, children's brain development, child health, children's learning and development and others. Kalanjiyam Bioscope Program - focusing on health Kalanjiyam conducts programs for Informing and educating families and communities about maternal and child health, for we believe that this is a key to having a healthier future generation of children. Our village communities are still lacking access on some basic and correct information on the health issues affecting them. To address these gaps we conduct BIOSCOPE village level awareness programs and inform our communities the key messages on maternal and child health for improving outcomes of pregnancy and early childhood development. These Bioscope programs travel from village to village spreading awareness on maternal and child health issues. Equipments such as LCD projector, audio equipment and big screen are used to project informative Tamil video documentaries. Health care Programs and outreach We conduct community based outreach programs to inform the local rural communities about TB, and other chronic health issues. Follow and referrals are also facilitated through linkages with the local Public health clinics or private providers. We also provide active and free health care access to children in our adopted schools / villages. Besides conducting health camps we provide free treatment for minor illnesses through local providers. WE are in the process of scaling up this program to provide mobile health care services to all our coverage villages. Youth Programs A key area of focus Kalanjiyam includes: astrengthening adolescent and youth, so as to provide life-skills and empower them to adopt healthier behaviors. We have been successfully working with Adolescents / young women in rural areas to improve both life-skills and livelihood skills. Providing livelihood training for youth Kalanjiyam has helped to train local youth by providing them driving skill and four wheeler driving license Life-skill program for Adolescent girls Kalanjiyam has launched a special life skills program for adolescent girls called 'Vanavil' meaning 'Rainbow' in Tamil. As part of a larger youth development program, Kalanjiyam's Vanavil project focuses on building essential life skills among adolescent girls in our villages. The goal of the Vanavil project is to enable these young women to gain self awareness, social and emotional coping skills for building their internal assets and other life skills required for better decision making, managing problems/ conflict and facing realities of life.
