Water For People

Water For People works to build a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease. This is our vision. We're on a mission. We work with people and partners to develop innovative and long-lasting solutions to the water, sanitation, and hygiene problems in the developing world. We strive to continually improve, to experiment with promising new ideas, and to leverage resources to multiply our impact.

Programs

In 2008, Water For People expanded its country program list based on the five-year strategic plan created by the board and staff. The organization now works in 9 countries: Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi in Africa; the state of West Bengal in India; Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua in Central America; Bolivia and Peru in South America. Many people ask how Water For People chooses new countries in which to work. The answer: The organization uses a strategic evaluation process at the continent, country, and regional levels. Just as an evaluation process for new countries is created, studies are completed within a single country to determine the correct regions in which to work as well as where to work within the region, where an overlap of interest, need, and predisposition by the constituents creates the foundation of success. By building up the capacity and infrastructure in contiguous or similar regions within a country, Water For People becomes a real and symbolic success to be emulated by other nongovernmental organizations and the government. Water For People typically works in rural areas, where the need is greatest for water and sanitation solutions. However, Water For People also works just outside of larger urban areas (peri-urban areas) and within urban areas themselves. In peri-urban areas, such as the Makata community outside of Blantyre, Malawi, the infrastructure for water and sanitation services was never built in the first place. Water For People also works in urban areas in Honduras helping to support systems that already exist. Regardless of geography, the work is done in single households, in communities, and in schools.
