Happy Holidays!

We at MuJER, the organization that you supported via Global Giving, want to wish you a happy holiday season and new year.  We also want to take the time to thank you for all your support in 2012.

As you are aware, MuJER (Women for Justice, Education and Awareness) is a nonprofit in Guatemala that empowers women through literacy and providing programs such as accelerated elementary school, vocational training, self-esteem building, and anti-violence programming. We now work with over 500 women in Guatemala, both in the capital and along the border with Mexico.

This last year we were able to maintain and expand our programs thanks to supporters such as yourself. We wanted to let you know how much the women of our community appreciate your support.

Thank you so much!

Thank you

I want to take a moment to just say thank you. I can't say that enough. Founded in 2005, MuJER has gone from serving one student to now reaching more than 300 women per year and we couldn't have done it without your help. In July, MuJER and founder Ana Moraga were recognized by the White House for their efforts toward the development of Guatemala and the community we serve. This honor belongs to you as much as it does to us. It is because of you and your ongoing support that MuJER continues to offer free educational and vocational classes to women in Guatemala. MuJER Founder Honored By The White House

On July 27, the White House, along with the U.S. State Department and U.S. AID, honored MuJER founder, Ana Moraga, as someone who has exemplified extraordinary successes and efforts toward the development of – and diplomacy with – their countries or communities of origin.

“The nine Champions of Change we honor today highlight the power of proximity. These members of the Latin American Diaspora remind us that geography matters, that being a good neighbor is both good manners and a good investment.  The Champions that we recognize today have helped their countries and communities of origin, and in doing so have bettered our region as a whole,” said Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson.  “These exceptional individuals, with their work in sports and community development, in education and financial inclusion, inspire others by their example.  In a region with such profound human links between our societies, ideas and inspiration spread quickly to the benefit of people all over the Americas and the Caribbean.”

The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Obama’s Winning the Future initiative. Each week, a different sector is highlighted and groups of Champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community leaders, are recognized for the work they are doing to serve and strengthen their communities.

As one of the Champions of Change nominees, Ana wrote a featured blog post for the White House website: "Toward an Eternal Spring for Women's Rights"
