Asociacion Civil Yachay Wasi Casa Cultural Ollantaytambo

YACHAY WASI is a Quechua expression (the ancient language of the Incas), which means "house of learning". This is what we have named this non-profit association, which hopes to open doors to culture and education, by inspiring an interest in reading, culture, sport, art and knowledge. Our mission is to complement and contribute to the formal and informal education of children and adolescents in the district of Ollantaytambo, offering various educational and recreational alternatives and activities. We are interested in forming people who are reflective, creative, critical, secure in themselves, motivated and balanced, transmitting to them good values and providing them with tool...

We keep on learning...

Our local teacher, Maribel with the littlest ones
Our local teacher, Maribel with the littlest ones

Since january our local teacher Maribel, has been attending a teacher training. There she learned much about Waldorf pedagogy, its principles, how to work with children, to respect the rhythms and processes of each child, the importance of accompanying children of early age, and many other things that has been pursuing in the daily work with her Group of children at the Yachay Wasi Early Education Center.

"Maribel says:" I am happy to learn new things. Now I feel more confidence in the classroom, working with my students. I understand better their needs and interests and have a broader vision of education and childhood. I'm very grateful with Yachay Wasi for giving me the opportunity to participate in this teacher training and continue to learn and have a future."

Maribel is not a certified teacher. She needs to continue participating in this training, which has a duration of 3 years to have a certificate as a Waldorf Teacher and thus have more opportunities to work in the future.

We appreciate your support and count on you so Maribel can reach her goal.
Thank you very much!!

Starting again...

Mayu Rumi and Flor de Liz playing in the new space
Mayu Rumi and Flor de Liz playing in the new space

After three years of running successfuly... This year unfortunately we weren´t able to start normally.

Since March we are suffering the usurpation of the facilities and properties of the 'YachayWasi' Early Education Centre and PRONOEI  "alameda"(wich we supported), affecting the education of our children, their families, to our workers and volunteers, and the population of Ollantaytambo in general.
After 3 years and a half  of rental and still 17 months for the completion of the contract (up toAugust2015),the owners of the property where the centre used to function, have erected a wall in front of the only entrance gate barring access to the building during a night, by surprise and violently to get a forced eviction.
Owners are charged for lack of the basic constitutional law by denying education to children and aggravated usurpation. Justice here is very slow and is not always "very fair", so we could not retrieve the building yet.

Despite this, we have not ceased to assit each day 40 boys and girls. We´ve started  in a small space that a parent has lended us for the first month.
After this we had to rent a new place.  And after looking around all the town and not finding anythign suitable, we had to rent a field that only had one room and a bathroom.
We improvised a classroom in a big tent and a provisional open room. The conditions are not the best and it is not possible to provide the same quality education we are used to, but we are doing our best for our children. .

Fortunately we have the support of all the families  which we work with, a lot of people from the community and from other NGOs and associations.

The Sacred Valley NGOs network organized a benefit party for us and all the  Yachay Wasi families made a "pollada" (lunch) fundraising.

Thanks to this supports and some private donations, as yours, we could start building the 3 classrooms. But we still need to finish them. The structure is ready (walls and roof) but we don´t have floor, windows or doors. We also want to make some playground structures (slide, swings, sand box, etc) as our little ones are claiming for that.
Therefore, more than ever, we need your help.
Please consider donating  to finish this classrooms, so we can continue working in good conditions with our children and their families.
Thank you very much!!

FOR A 2014 FULL OF JOY

in Yachay Wasi we explore to discover the world
in Yachay Wasi we explore to discover the world

Dear friend,

Another year came to an end, and we didn't want to let it go without thanking you for your support, your efforts, your nice words, good energy, collaboration, for having us on mind, for that and for much more...Thank you! You make possible that this project continues to grow.

2013 In Yachay Wasi was filled with games, songs, laughter, walks, visits, learning, nature, friendship, love, containment, theatre, painting, dancing and joy.

We want to have all this and more in 2014.

We will open another space for 1 and 2 year olds due to high demand of the families of Ollantaytambo; We will continue organizing parents schools; offering psychological support to families, especially to mothers, victims of domestic violence; and we want to start offering children's therapies for so many children who need it.

To achieve this we still need your support.

It may be in several ways:  donating grants through global giving; as a volunteer; hosting a fundraising campaign; as a “messenger” bringing donations if you travel to Peru; or simply support us with your love, good energy and cute comments, that give us strength to go forward!

We wish you a 2014 full of light, peace, love and joy! Lead out your inner child from time to time, to see life from the eyes of a child and you will discover how wonderful it is!
