Women's Microfinance Initiative

Started by women in the Washington, D.C. area, WMI makes loans to impoverished women in developing nations who have no access to banks. Issuing affordable, collateral-free loans for as little as $50, WMI promotes women's economic empowerment to reduce global poverty. WMI's goal is to help poor women build assets to stabilize their income, improve their familiy's living standard, become advocates for their families/communities, and transition into independent banking and the formal economy.

School Motto Living Onward

School Motto Living Onward
The school motto written on the front proclaims knowledge above all. Its chipped and faded paint is barely legible. Help us make this motto mean something again to the children of Buyobo! (view small | med | large | orig)

View of the Hole in the Roof

View of the Hole in the Roof
Headmistress Irene Nbende points to gaping hole in the roof of a typical classroom. Chunks of cement litter the grond where they have broken off from the floor. The blackboard is so old, chalk barely shows up when teachers write on it. There is no furniture in many classrooms like this one. It is impossible for students to learn in this environment. View of the School

View of the School
Buyobo primary school was built in the 1930's and has had no major repairs since that time. It is falling apart with crumbling cement floors and holes in the roof. There are over 100 children in some of the classroom and in these conditions they can simply not learn. Students from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland learned of their plight and travelled to Uganda in July, 2010 to help. (view small | med | large | orig)
