Mission

It is our mission to provide access for all children of the community to an effective Early Childhood Development Programme, in a safe and caring environment that will prepare our young children to enjoy a successful start in a formal learning environment.

Programs

Ibhabhathane Community Centre has 4 main activities: 1.Provision of Child Supervision: Social-Economic challenges have rendered many parents in Riebeeck East unemployed. Child minders are unaffordable to the majority of the community, and the shorter life expectancy of many community members due to HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis has resulted in less extended family members being available to take care of young children while parents are at work or out looking for work. The Ibhabhabhathane Community Centre provides a safe place where parents can leave their children at no charge, and where the children are cared for by trained and informed staff. 2. Provision of Balanced Nutrition: Many households also do not have the means to provide their children with a balanced nutritional meal, which leads to children with greatly weakened immune systems. Ibhabhabhathane Community Centre provides a daily feeding scheme, supplying each child attending the center with 2 nutritional meals per day. 3. Provision of Early Childhood Education: In Riebeeck East, the Ibhabhathane Community Centre provides the only facility that addresses the educational and nutritional needs of the community's young children (ages 0-4). The facility provides a stimulating programme that encourages our children to creatively develop cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects. The importance of an early childhood education is undisputed. A study by David Weikaart found that for every one dollar invested in a good pre-school programme, there is an estimated cost saving of 16 dollars in remedial, juvenile crime and failure in high school. However, the school curriculum is becoming demanding. According to an Imbewu /Department of Education study done in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, in 2002, 25 percent of learners drop out of the system at the end of Grade 1 and a further 9 percent repeat Grade 1. This means that 34 percent of our children are entering school unprepared, and because of this their lives are doomed from the start. Our service delivery provides a strong foundation for entering a formal school career. Our children are more prepared to enjoy a successful school career that will in turn better equip them to successfully make meaningful contributions to their community and society at large. 4. Educating the Community: There is an African saying that says: "It takes a village to raise a child". We believe that early childhood education cannot happen in isolation of the family and the community. An essential part of the community education initiative has been to communicate the the aims and objectives of importance of the Ibhabhathane Community Centre to our parents and the community. As a result, Riebeeck East is ready to embrace such a facility and our community understands the importance of it. We work in close partnerships with Departments of Education and Social Development as well as other NGO's such as the Centre for Social Development. Our community members, staff and parent body have the opportunity to attend workshops on child nutrition and education which they value and welcome.
