On Dec 28th, 2008 22 Nyaka students graduated from primary 7- our first graduating class. The graduation ceremony was their day, the teachers' day, and the guardians' day. Behind the graduates you can see their guardians who care for them and stand by them.

What a day to have been at the Nyaka school! Against all odds, 22 students graduated from p7 at a school ranked 3rd among more than 100 other schools in the district. What else could they do on this day but proclaim their success to their community. They marched all through Kambuga town with a huge banner and a brightly colored band out front and several hundred students, grandmothers, guardians, staff, and visitors in tow.

64% of our students at Nyaka are girls. Mostly because the school takes the neediest children and girls are less likely than boys to complete primary school and even less likely to get a secondary school education. This is the face of a strong willed woman who beat the odds.

The Grandmothers are the true heroes of the AIDS pandemic in Africa. They take care of their orphaned grandchildren despite old age and incredible poverty. Our project provides support to these heroic ladies and are the key component of our community program as they care for the orphans.

In Jan 2009, construction on the Blue Lupin Library began. The Library will be public- a place where community members can access family planning info, agricultural extension resources, a quiet space to read and expand their minds, and a multipurpose area to hold events in. Visit the nyakaschool.org for more info.

The construction is well on its way. If you have Facebook, you can view a complete description of Nyaka's aspirations with the library at our Facebook page: Nyaka AIDS Foundation. Don't forget to be a fan.

Grannies throughout the district have organized into self-help groups. Rightly so, they are demanding adult literacy classes, agricultural extension services, and healthier lifestyles. Nyaka is providing support in a variety of ways by building latrines, providing starter funds for savings and loans coops, and fascilitating visits from agricultural extension officers.

In 2009 the Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Turning the Tide Campaign aimed at redoubling their efforts to extend services to more grandmothers and children who have been gravely affected by HIV/AIDS. In a symbolic demonstration of grandmother's unity from around the world, the Nyaka grannies staged a skit simultaneously with grannies groups in Africa and in Canada.
